First NATO helicopter strikes today in Libya

Apache's don't go hunting targets all by their themselves, British special forces are on the ground.

Proof? To me, that sounds like conjecture, especially when the UN resolution expressly forbids countries sending foot soldiers in. They are supporting the Libyan rebels, there's your ground forces.

Well, a while ago (I'm not sure if this turned out to be true or not) I heard that some SAS troops had been captured by Gaddafi's forces. So the MOD could have sent more in if they deemed it necessary.

Here is a more detailed report on the helicopter attacks.

sorry, but since when do the US care about UN resolutions. ever heard of that country called iraq?

of course there are spec ops soldiers/intelligence operatives on the ground in lybia. with that amount of airstrikes in cities you need someone to spot and mark targets.
and don't get me started on the importance of intelligence gathering

Let me just put this SAS thing to bed.

The SAS are on the ground in libya, without them, attacks on command outposts, radar stations, airfields and other military outposts would be hard. The SAS distract and sabotage bases, but thier main job is to set up beacons so that Apache's and fighter jets can strike.

I would like so say its near impossible for SAS soldiers to be captured considering they are in groups running our everywhere more than likely armed to the teeth and in disguise. They didn't even get "caught" by the rebels last time they allowed themselves to be spotted, after all their task was to talk to the rebel leader and they completed that mission while other SAS troops had been in libya weeks before.

As the saying goes " The SAS are never captured they hand themselves in.

yes you can capture SAS operators. a friend of mine served with the 22nd and i have an idea on how badass they really are - not from movies or videogames.
but there#s been a couple of instances when SAS soldiers were captured, after all: england isn't sparta.

as for the incident in lybia:
i rather think they were surprised by rebel forces near their LZ before they could meet with whoever they were going to meet. the public announcement of captured SAS soldiers and MI6 operatives propably wasn't part of their plan, so something went wrong.

maybe they could've tried to shoot their way out, but shooting at the faction you're trying to contact would've been a really bad idea.

EDIT - nevermind, i overread the "they hand themselves in" part.

EDIT 2 - since some forum members don't seem to know about that incident:

It looks like the Same revolutionaries in Egypt that toppled Mubarak seem to be preparing to revolt against the military and force them out of power if elections are not held soon

How mysterial. What evidence is there that the military rule is corrupt? and also didn't they already have an election of some sort a month ago?.

no, its because the military is moving to slow with the protesters demands.

Shrapnel near the heart? Are they going to put an arc reactor with a magnet in his chest to make sure it does't kill him?

Bad call, Saudi Arabia. Just because he tries to rule with an iron fist doesn't mean he should become Iron Man.

20 bucks says a coup de tat will be attempted.

and even if it fails, it can't lead to a Civil War since there already is one.

and it would be an irony, since Gaddafi came to power in that fashion.

More airstrikes in Tripoli tonight

White House in touch with Yemen's vice president
