Gadhafi government holds talks with US officials

Reports of Deadly Sectarian Clashes in Syria

so Gaddafi's troops left there heavy weapons in Brega, they may not have the firepower to hold Ras Lanuf.
Why does he insist on speaking with the U.S., we're not involved.
he insists, because the US still holds sway. I like stressing how much Canada, Britain and France do in the world, but even I need to say the US is powerful.

If Gaddafi can convince the US that he is a good guy(good luck) then the whole alliance will likely fall apart, just like it would if he convinced Canada, Britain or France to do so. It's just the whole resolution was Canada's idea, Britain and France are the front runners in it, so the US, as hard as they would be to convince, are still the easiest to go for.

Now to be fair even if one is convinced it wouldn't bring down the alliance. Remember there are at least 50 countries in the coalition the USA leaving will have an impact but nothing major. Britain and France would not give up until he is gone no matter how much America tells us to stop if they get persuaded.

You give a America a bit more credit that it deserves.
maybe so, regardless, that is his motive for doing so. He after all believes this is all an American imperialistic invasion.

In Libya rebels are making steady progress in Brega and they are also pushing towards Tripoli, as Russia slams US for recognisng their leadership as legitimate government.
Also there are some talks of Gaddafi being allowed to stay in Libya if he gave up politics

LIBYA
France has admitted they would be OK with Gaddafi remaining in Libya if he removes himself and his family from politics.

While the Rebels have secured the town of Brega, fighting is fierce in the surrounding area where Gaddafi forces are still in control of the oil fields.

The US held a one time meeting with Gaddafi's government, to deliver the message that he must go or no progress will be made in either direction

YEMEN
The Yemeni opposition has created a 'national coalition council' to oppose the Yemeni government.

The US has been informed by this council that they will honour any agreement the US had made with Saleh in counter terror operations.

SYRIA
The Syrian opposition reiterated that they will not fight back, that they will only protest peacefully.

Syrian security forces opened fire on a funeral procession and killed at least 14.

Gaddafi forces have regained part of the town of Brega and have the refineries under their control.

It appears that the strategy of Gaddafi has become one of a Scorched Earth policy. He has planted mines and explosives all over the areas under his control and will detonate them if his forces are made to retreat. This has stopped the rebel advance that has become more about resources for the time than taking Tripoli.

What's NATO planning to do?

only option i can think of is EOD and combat engineers... but that requires boots on the ground or training there is no time for. i'm sure the Rebels will use sheep to look for mine fields though. but that explains what Gaddafi meant when he said he would blow up Tripoli.

Lol sheep. Could use unguided bombs from NATO aircraft as well.

that would help to, but wouldn't that only clear a varied area? still it would be more effective then using sheep... NATO could sell them mine clearing vehicles as well right?
