Gaddafi govt. says that the Sirte civilian airport has been attacked and destroyed. they refuse to take reporters to the scene 'for their safety'

But they were so ready to take reporters to that smokeless crater?
yeah. they suspect that the 'smokeless crater' was the site of a very old strike from when Gaddafi took power

Give 'em more oversight and tactical power and they are likely to contribute more.

I'm not so sure I'm ready for the Arab League to take command when most of the member states are facing major protests in their own country. I'm all for increased cooperation though.

what we really need is a country like Turkey(a Muslim western nation) to be in command. they would represent both sides

I don't think that NATO or the Arab League should actually be in command.

Perhaps a Canadian General with Arab oversight?
Internationally Canadians have never been seen as imperialist, where as Britain, the US, and France all have.

the US should pull alot of their force but still be involved, that way they are showing support but are not in command.

if the US is in command the Arab world will see it as Imperialism

  • 03.21.2011 2:15 PM PDT

so either NATO or the Arab League will be in command then?

not sure, most countries want the Arab League to have more involvement in the leadership, and most countries don't want NATO to be in command, though NATO looks like they will take command either way. We are still waiting on a response from the UN summit from today that was to decide who would take command

  • 03.21.2011 2:21 PM PDT

Probably not either of them. Definitely not NATO.

all we really know is it will NOT be the US.

the US has made it clear they want to hand over command. they want no onus on them that says they are being an imperial power

If the US takes out a load of troops out of libyia, some will take it as a sign that the USA does not support the invasion, and that could damage the whole situation

possibly, however, the US can't afford sustaining the number of troops they have there, nor can they afford the Arab world seeing the US as invading Libya. The vast majority of the world doesn't want the US at the forefront of the Libyan mission

I really hope no more ground troops get deployed. Ground troops in this will suddenly make this a western overthrow of the gaddafi regime, not a civil uprising. it would make it a western intervention, not a Libyan reform.

The only troops that had boots on the ground were the Canadian JTF-2 and British SAS troops who were there officially as security for Humanitarian aid(ie Red cross) that is how it should stay.

The Goal is NOT to kill Gaddafi. We are there ONLY to make sure he does not kill civilians. Infact our mandate can potentially leave gaddafi in power, as long as he quits killing civilians, that being said the Coalition will make no effort to keep him alive or in power either

Even the Rebels don't want him dead, they want to capture him to put him on trial from crimes against humanity

The AL is not a very powerful organization, no where near as influential towards its members as the EU or NATO.
