Libyan Government and the Libyan National Transitional Council are to meet in the African Union capital to negotiate ceasefire and peace talks

A Libyan training Jet was splashed by the French today.

It was a training Jet.
It was a plane with military markings that was in the air during a no-fly zone. it was a legitimate target that was in direct opposition of the no-fly zone.

I'm happy the French shot it down. It shows the coalition isn't kidding about it.

NATO owned fighters will only attack if no-fly zone is violated, and will only attack ground targets if the ground targets attack the NATO forces. However, non-NATO owned coalition forces can still operate under the UN sanction to destroy ground targets if they are attacking civilian populations.

I'm watching a report on Sky News about the rebels and they have some pretty impressive weapons.

One had what it looked like to me was an AK 200. The new Russian rifle. Where are these weapons coming from?

Then Russia are highly likely to distributing weapons to the rebels through the Egyptians. If they (the Egyptians) are buying them if it's the AK 200.

That means instead of putting ships in the Mediterranean Russia are supporting the uprising under the nose of the UN, or the UN know and don't care.

Either way if this is true Russia are supporting the uprising and making a profit.

This is some Tom Clancy novel -blam!- lol

Egypt is supplying them yes, and that was an AK-103, not an Ak-200

But doesn't that mean Egypt are buying directly from Russia?

IZHMASH is the manufacture of the AK103.

not necessarily, Venezuala was a close ally of Gaddafi and they use the AK-103, so it's not that far of a stretch to see them in Libya as most of the rebel weapons are captured. Ethiopia (part of the African Union also uses them)

Either way, the Russians have said they want Gaddafi to fall, they just oppose western intervention.

Venezuela is an ally to Russia and the two have had arms deals in the past that's no secret. That's probably why Venezuela have the AK 103

I also think that the U.N and NATO would watch any weapon exports from Venezuela because of the type of country it is.

And Ethiopia, the amount of warlords in Africa. One would have got 'em from somewhere.

Bottom line here: I think Russia sold weapons to Egypt to arm the rebels.

In Soviet Russia, weapon sells you!
But really, I think Russia was probably suppling Egypt to arm the rebels and Venezuala, not knowing Venezuala was selling the AK-103's to Gaddafi
Thats my two cents on the whole AK-103 thing

On the topic of the AK-103s seen in rebel hands, Ethiopia manufactures the AK-103, primarly a company named Gafat armenment engineering. Ethiopia is also one of the largest arms dealers in AFtrica, right behind the "Big Four" (the Africas largest weapons suppliers; China, Russia, America and the UK)
Venezuela also privatly manufactures AK-103s and has been known to export them to warzones all over the world
