The US will no longer participate in strike missions, pulling their cruise missile support and Air to Ground capabilities as of 22:00 GMT(in 5 hours).

They will continue to have fighters in the air to enforce the no-fly zone, but will not take action against ground targets unless fired upon.

NATO will still have a number of US owned A-10s and AC-130s available to them.

So basically the US are pulling out.

This might have something to do with Obama wanting to run for the re-election next year.
Likely. it also probably has to to with the fact that the US always said they would back out and play a support role later on. they never wanted to stay in command or leading the operation. I'm impressed they stuck with that attitude.

I just hope this situation doesn't go on too long.

On a slightly different topic, but still relevant to this, has anyone heard that the UN may also get involved in the ongoing Ivory Coast situation:

to the question: No, i just like having stimulating fact based converstation with people about current events. This is a method to do so while keeping people informed about a major happening in the world.

to the statement: No, i won't 'just let it die'. I am enjoying this thread, and apparently so are others. Also what is an 'abortion of a thread' that phrase doesn't make sense.

In general that is true, It's actually a similar situation as to Libya, where the legitimate president was actually the leader of a rebel faction until recently where the UN recognized him as the legitimate voice of the people.

the old dictator, and effectively now rebel leader is being pushed back.
