Because they, after learning that they were responsible for the extermination of their creators (the precursors), realized they were unworthy of carrying on the mantle so the decided to make humans the inheritors o the mantle and commit mass suicide as a punishment for violating the mantle they held so dear...

Plus, the flood was their punishment for destroying the precursors, so they probably realized the rest of the life in the galaxy did not have to pay for their sins...

They didn't all die. They went on the great journey.

There's a contradiction there. The Encyclopedia later says that they left the galaxy. Seeing as Cryptum states they controlled over 3million worlds, and that they were fully capable of traveling beyond the Orion arm, I'm going with they left the galaxy.

Ehh, i dislike that seeing how i don't think they had ships at the ready to leave at that time. Born said it himself that they never needed to expanded past the galaxy, so i doubt they could do so at whim.

Wait, if the Forerunners made humans the inheritors because they considered themselves unworthy, why did they create Shield Worlds? To save themselves? I mean. You pointed out that they wanted to take themselves with the Flood as punishment.

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

Especially after the devastating affect the Forerunner Flood war must have had on their fleets.

The shield worlds were created before the flood had the help of mendicant bias, which took forerunners by surprise, so they could not flee, or evacuate to the shield worlds... They, for a moment, thought they would have time to escape...

That was before they thought they were unworthy of the mantle.
