edit: Thanks for posting (constructively, lol) to those who did, but this thread solved all my problems recently: http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=45148977

I've experimented a lot and at one point had Halo 3 running well, but it's slow again. MM is slow, all players walk slow, the AR/BR/Needler/Spiker/SMG/Rockets/Pistol/Brute Shot fires slow, grenades are slow (people in the game stop using them because they become useless) stickies go through people or stick when they shouldn't, melees are slow, it's ridiculous. Cmon Bungie, Halo 2 never had this many problems.

For inbound/outbound netbios, do I allow them through the firewall or not? When I do allow them my router records hundreds of corrected blocks and they always just keep stacking up. I don't know if that effects performance, but it seems to. Should I open the ports the xbox needs, use DMZ mode (static IP), or both?

Latency wise - your best bet is plugging straight into your modem. Every router/modem/firewall you put in-between your xbox and the internet is only delaying the time it takes the signal to travel in between - even if your ports are open.

Firewalls are great for protecting your PC, but in the xbox live world it will only slow down matchmaking times, and if enough ports are closed, it can severely impact your connection. If you arent allowed to connect to the host, then all traffic will be sent to another person, and then to you - which means there will be twice as much lag - or more.

If your modem has multiple connections on it run the first one into your xbox directly, and run the second one into your firewall. If it only has one port then I need to know what else you are running.

If your firewall is a modem/firewall combo then turn it off. Seriously. Open all your ports. Enable port forwarding. Disable all security and turn off your wireless broadcast. Buy a hardware firewall for our computer network and leave your xbox out of it - or use a software firewall on your computer like the pro's (me).

Tell me what your chain looks like:

Example:

Comcast >> Cable Modem >> Netgear Router >> xbox

Is that like what I did to your mother? Although I believe the technical term for that is a pig on the spit.

Good times.

Of course it did, I don't give a crap about Donald Trump. Excuse me for not keeping up with the life and times of a ginger-pubed 70 year old who wears a wig and buys mail-order brides.
