First off, they shut down all original xbox games.
Second, they were dying. Battlefront II, the #2 game, only had under 10 people on at once, while the #10 game, Burnout 3, was completely dead. You would have to wait for matches.
Halo 2 was dying as well, with most of the population consisting of Xbox 360 players trying to play Halo on the cheap (this was when Halo 3 still was expensive before it was a Platinum Hit) and cheapasses who couldn't afford a 360. So they could make service improvements that the Xbox 1 was holding back, they shut it down.

You know how expensive the original XBOX LIVE servers were? Microsoft got rid of their servers because hardly anyone played original XBOX LIVE games anymore.
Keep wearing those goggles.
