In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Nothing, the Covenant only landed/invaded in New Mombasa Africa and a orbital elevator tower near South America I believe.

Nope

The First Battle of Earth is told in Ghosts of Onyx but I don't remember it mentioning New York.

Nope. THe landed all around the world, they just had most of their guys at the portal for obvious reasons.

You can even see in crows nest that there is a map with markers that are likely covenant cruisers...all around the world.

the entire battle for eath is also told in the halo encyclopedia and through other media, which states that a very large portion of earths population was wiped out.

There is no canonical reference to the Covenant ever landing in New York.

For those who said that all of the Covenant activity was in New Mombasa, there was a battle of Cleveland, as well as other engagements mentioned in other places.

After the war, the Human population in the Galaxy was estimated at 200 million. That would mean that most of the people one Earth were wiped out.

False, 5 other colonies were untouched and never found, one of them holding 500 million, the human population was well over 1 billion by the end of the war.

False, Cleveland was attacked, along with Australia being whipped clean off the face of the Earth.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

All we know is that most of Earth's population was wiped out between Halo 2 and Halo 3. Sydney and Cleveland were both destroyed. We don't know what actually happened to New York, but that doesn't mean nothing happened to the city.

I'm actually writing a fan fiction about the Battle of New York now.

I stand corrected. I got my number from the Beastarium, but it seems that I was wrong.

As best as I can figure, they must have meant that number to be the population left on Earth. That or they wrote it a decimal point off and 5,ooo,ooo,ooo became 500,000,000 in the draft.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

If it means anything, I'm writing a short story about ODSTs who are dropped in New York.

Interesting. I'm writing a short story about a civilian evacuation during the Battle of New York.

We should collaborate :D

You could have 2 main characters ODST/civilian that meet up in the evac.

That would actually be an awesome idea. Maybe they have a similar destination. Or the civilian is in need an the ODST is willing to go AWOL to help him/her out. Or something completely different. Just an idea.

I agree. But I don't think many people would be surviving. I'm trying very hard to flesh out what civilian life is like in 2552. It's a pretty grim world.

In addition, I'm also attempting to flesh out the City as a character itself, kind of like how Bungie tried to give life to New Mombasa in ODST. All I really have so far is that the Empire State Building is dwarfed compared to the other buildings in the city, and that New York City now stretches through all of New Jersey, all of Connecticut, a fair portion of upstate New York, a bit of Pennsylvania, and all of Long Island.

I was thinking something along the lines of the girl and the cop from ODST.

Maybe the civilian has "intel" that the covenant may want?

Yeah, sort of like Ignatio Delgado in The Cole Protocol.

Hmmm...interesting. Bungie has lacked very much in portraying humanity in their games. I think the Halos are awesome, don't get me wrong. But, we never really knew who we were protecting in the games. Because we didn't know what humanity was like, ya know? That's why I like when people have stories about civilians and whatnot.

That's why I hope it goes over well. I feel that violet riots, suicides, and other awful things would be trivial in everyday life in such a grim world.

And in such a big city, refugees from surviving colonies may be arriving daily by the thousands. Massive decolonization, reminiscent to the Ellis Island days.

Thats what happens when the world ends. Are you going to have anything like people forming a resistance and trying to survive.

I think they would show up after the city has been destroyed, but local militias may exist under the grid from the Police.

By the way I live in New York, so I hope I do a good job of it.
