That would actually be an awesome idea. Maybe they have a similar destination. Or the civilian is in need an the ODST is willing to go AWOL to help him/her out. Or something completely different. Just an idea.
I think you should go for the idea of an important civilian needing to get out the city and this ODST being assigned to protect them, creating a strong friendship throughout the story. Ending in the death of the ODST in an awesome way.
That seems like a great idea. Maybe the ODST dies in the end to save the civilian. But, then again, that might be too predictable? Maybe not. Or the ODST sacrafices himself to complete whatever it is the civilian needs done.
Maybe you could place a twist where the civilian dies to save the ODST due to there close friendship.
Yeah. I was thinking along the lines of something like, "We need every last soldier in the fight. I'll take care of this." (Civilian to ODST) Sort of like what Sgt. Forge said to the one Spartan in HW.
