Subject: The Fate of Thom

In the Extended Cut of the Halo Reach "Deliver Hope" promotional video, a Spartan-III named Thom apparently sacrifices himself to complete the destruction of a Covenant cruiser. I was just wondering; if he knew he had only seconds to live, why even bother to try to run away? In Halo Reach, it is mentioned that a teleporter pylon was linked to a cloaked Covenant Assault Carrier. Maybe he used this system to teleport out of harms way before the nuke blew? Or maybe (less likely) he simply went into Armor Lock? It's probaably just wishful thinking that he survived. It would be cool if he escaped and it's actually Thom posing as the "Rookie" character in Halo 3: ODST. It actually makes tons of sense since how can any human take so much punisment and not die? Plus the Rookie can jack occupied Covenant vehicles and kill Brutes with Melee attacks; no ordinary human could do that no matter how tough they are. Anyway, just throwing it out there. What do you think?

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Thom =/= The Rookie, everything you said about the Rookie is for gameplay reasons.

He died a dumb death, he could have just left it in the middle of the gravity lift and not get inside, thus, saving his life.

Thom is dead and that's the end of it.

how can you say he died a dumb death when he took a whole carrier down with him?

If a covenant soldier was atop the lift when the nuke came sailing in they could simply reverse the lift or deactivate it and drop the nuke out...

Because he could've taken it down without him.

I was playing off the word "death".

It's highly probable that he's dead, but he may be simply MIA.
Either way, we aren't going to see him any time soon.

He could've found a way to survive, but instead he just stood there.

thom's dead, he should've picked up kat herself carrying the bomb and thrown her into the carrier and ran out himself, then i wouldn't have died on campaign so much from getting drivin off of a cliff

Bungie Pentathlon - who actually cares ?

People really do have problems letting go of characters claiming they are alive....firstly we had Jorge, Noble 6 then Johnson, now Thom.

All their deaths were shown on screen.....this is nothing like Elvis.

CrimsonPandaStudios

The only one who could have survived of noble team is Jun and Jorge. It was Marty who started the idea of Jorge not dying

  • 03.22.2011 6:53 AM PDT

But the slipspace drive had to have been detonatoed manually so he had to have died--unless he made a marine do it instead which is very un-Spartan-like. No, his death was meant to be symbolic like Sam's death in Eric Nylund's The Fall of Reach novel.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I love how every character in Halo who has died has been somehow related to the Rookie through the mind of this community.

yet.

For all intents and purposes, yeah, Jorge is dead, but it is highly likely that he could be brought back if 343 felt like bringing him back. All he did was fire up a randomized Slipspace vector, there's at least a 50% chance of survival, but unless 343/Bungie actually says otherwise, he is indeed dead. Though that won't stop fanfic writers who need an interesting idea (hehe, myself included).

Hehe, well that's your own fault there pal XD Everyone knows you must absolutely NEVER let friendly AI in Halo so much as touch the wheel of a vehicle if you're riding with them. Though the Marines seem to have passed their Driver's Ed courses in Reach...Kat on the other hand, yeah XD Don't let her so much as touch the wheel or you're going to regret it.

No way at all Jorge could have survived. Even if he managed to live through entry, there's no oxygen in slipspace and MJOLNIR Mark V only has 90 minutes of oxygen reserves. Plus the fact that slipspace drives require constant maintainence, and they're certainly not designed to be used as makeshift bombs.

Also, the Ardent Prayer would no longer exist as the blast's epicenter was inside the ship (when it is supposed to be in front of the bow).

In Data Hive, right after you find Dare, she asks, "You're not really a Rookie are you?" If he's not special somehow, why would Section-III go through great lengths to insert a special opeartive in an ODST unit. I'll tell you, ONI knew the true scope of the mission's vitality to the war so put in an undercover Spartan so as to not attract attention from the Covenant. Also, Vergil seemed to be drawn to and trust the Rookie. All Forerunner constructs only do this to Spartans and Engineers were created by the Foreruuner. Puttin 2 and 2 together yet?

The Rookie is not a Spartan. Dare said "something tells me you're not actually a rookie."
He isn't.

where did those excerpts come from? are they even canon?

If they're sending a Spartan on a top priority mission to get a Tier One asset, they are going to send a Spartan in full MJOLNIR armour, not undercover as a Rookie ODST. What you said makes no sense.

How could they attract attention from the Covenant is the mission was put in place when Regret was leaving to go to Installation 05?

And no, Forerunner constructs do not just react to Spartans, otherwise Professor Anders and Doctor Halsey would have to be Spartans. It reacts to any human because they're Reclaimers (minus S-III Gamma Company because of neurological augmentations).

it does make sense AJ. If covenant forces spot a high value target (a spartan) theyll send everything they got and compromise the mission. Think strategically, christ.
