If thom destroyed a cruiser, why where they surprized when they saw the covie on reach??

u srs?

Perhaps because The Covenant had destroyed every single human colony that they've found during the war, Humans were severely outnumbered and with inferior technology so it's just logic to think that they'd be crapping their pants when a Supercarrier along with four corvettes decided to show up at Reach to say hi.

He was asking why are they surprised because in the trailer he destroyed the cruiser on Reach.

Yeah, I don't think they will bring Jorge back, but his survival is still very possible, imo. It's the same scenario as with Chief at the end of Halo 3, except Jorge doesn't have an AI with him or cryo pod.

So, its not the same at all?

Jorge is dead. They made an improvised bomb. A BOMB!. As in destruction, not transportation. Yes, a slipspace drive used in the correct manner will move a ship into slipspace. But if not, it will destroy the ship and everything else around it in the process of the transition i.e Jorge.

A slipspace drive will always function the same way, IE transport something into slipspace. Very little changes if it's either not mounted or mounted improperly. It will always move an object into slispace, no matter what state the drive is in as long as it can function. I don't see any reason why the Ardent Prayer isn't completely intact and traveling through slipspace, or outside of slipspace by this point and floating in the middle of nowhere.

The Super Carrier was destroyed because not all of it was taken in by the portal, only the middle was and then that got cut off, it's exactly the same thing as with Forward Unto Dawn. The front half was through the portal when it collapsed and cut the back end of the ship with Chief and Cortana off. The rear end of the ship was completely in tact, as was the front. The slipspace "bomb" is just about the same thing.

The slipspace bomb sheared the Long Night of Solace in half because it was within reach of the radius of the portal's expansion. Since the explosion began within the Ardent Prayer, applying the same physics we know that would have been torn up too.

All he did was fire up a randomized Slipspace vector, there's at least a 50% chance of survival

Oh, joy. Please astound me with your acumen. What, pray tell, complex mathematics did you compile to come to this conclusion?

I'm very curious how, in the void of galactic space and transitioning randomly, he has a 1 in 2 chance (at the least, folks!) of landing on something with oxygen that won't kill him in the impact?

Assuming he ever transitions out of slipspace, and hasn't been driven insane.

Hmm?

I don't need math to reach my conclusion, and Bungie hasn't even put out any sort of math computational data on slipspace to my knowledge, all I need is common sense.

Hmm, you seem to have missed that I said he'd be on the Ardent Prayer. He wouldn't be floating around helplessly in space, what ever gave you that idea?

Only the middle section of the LNoS was within the portal though, and the rest was outside it, that's why it was destroyed, because only part of the ship was in the portal when it closed. Why should the starting point of the portal matter? No matter what, a ship goes through slipspace portals in "sections" all the time, starting with the prow, why would it make a difference to the Ardent Prayer's survival having the portal within the ship instead of outside, what makes you think it would function any differently than normal?

Exactly, the LNoS was sheared in half because it came into contact with the slipspace portal is it opened up. Slipspace is (from what I gather) tearing a hole in space, since the explosion began within the AP it would have torn apart the vessel.

Plus, look at how the slipspace portal opens, that is not how it would normally open (compare it to how the rest of the Covenant fleet arrive seconds later).

That further proves the point that the cruiser shown was attacking other Colony or else the whole Winter Contingency level would be pretty much useless.

Actually I think it was split in half because of the portal collapsing, not from it opening. I'm not even sure if the opening of a Slipspace portal even destroys anything.

As far as I've seen, or at least remember, we've never seen a human ship transition into slipspace through a portal generated by its own engine, all the times we've seen them it's been using something like either the Ark's Portal or piggy backing of a Covenant ship. And what we see in the video you linked is Covenant slipspace technology, which has always been vastly superior and different to the UNSC's. And besides which, all those ships were exiting slipspace, and entering and exiting have always looked rather different from each other.

Even if that's the reason, it still means the Ardent Prayer is gone.

Covenant slipspace technology is superior in terms of how fast they are able to travel through it, the physics are still the same, the slipspace portal wouldn't have a different appearance because it's a Covenant drive. Look at Regret's ship (was not "piggybacked"), it's the same looking portal as one Shaw-Fujikawa drives make.

Entering and exiting do not look different at all, when entering the portal is only sustained because they need time to head into its maw.

Actually not just in speed, Covenant slipspace tech is worlds better than the UNSC's, the Covenant's grasp on how slipspace works, might suck balls, but their tech is much more advanced than the UNSC's. Like their ability to make pin-point jumps, and when they enter slipspace, in all the stuff I've read, it was described as more like making a precise and delicate incision like a scalpel, while the UNSC slipspace technology is like ripping a hole with brute force. And have we seen a human ship, or human based tech, generate a slipspace portal before? I don't ever remember seeing one.

The exiting looks completely different from entering, the entrance portals for Covenant and Forerunner tech are always a dark, blue-black disk shaped tunnel, it's like a white bubbling mass that an exit portal is. And for the piggy backing I was talking about the human ships entering slipspace, the only instances I can think of where we have seen a human ship go into slipspace has been when In Amber Clad piggy backed off of Regret's slipspace wake, and when the Forward Unto Dawn went through the Ark's portal.

Even if the UNSC didn't screw with the slipspace drive (which i think they did hence bomb) for all we know the coordinates were in a star. And slipspace drives can't just be plucked apart and work the same without being hooked up to anything.

Halo Wars: Genesis and Halo Legends: Origins Part 2 depict Phoenix-class ships generating slipspace portals.

Regret's ship didn't create a "purple tunnel" in Halo 2 and ODST, neither did the many Covenant ships leaving High Charity at the end of Gravemind and the Keyship also had the same effect as a Covenant ship.

Ok, I haven't read that, and I haven't seen Origins in a while.

Watch the opening scene for ODST again, the portal created by Regret's ships is definitely primarily purple. What ships leaving at the end of "Gravemind"? I never saw any ships leaving High Charity, do you mean all those flashes off in the distance?
Well yeah, because Covenant slipspace technology is essentially the same as the Forerunner's.
