In the Halo manual it was said that the Hunters are normally at a height of over 12 feet, but when they are in their armor they contract to about eight feet. I'd guess that the hunters are... compressed... too, uhh. I have no idea why. To make their tissue more dense for combat, maybe?

Haven't you ever seen them stand up straight? I think they crouch most of the time because their armor is so heavy.

That seems about right. If you change a Hunter model with a MC model- they do alot of crouching. ;-)

If you get some active camo and walk up to the Hunters when they don't know that you're there, it's pretty funny. They're standing upright, and they just kinda sway back and forth and look around. Plus, they have REALLY long necks that bend this way and that. Then if you make a noise or something so that they think someone is around, but they don't know where you are, the spines on their backs quiver and make a rattling noise, and then they crouch into their "battle position", and their heads almost disappear. The best levels to do it on are Silent Cartographer (but you have to knock the Hunters off of one of the ledges so you can meet them again later), and AotCR (make sure they don't come out of the entrance to the underground room, or they'll know you're there). It's pretty cool.

I think that hunters crouch so much because their armor dosn't cover their entire body (weight issue, i'd imagine), and they (obviosly) want to protect themselves as much as possible. I think that their armor covers just their upper body and lower torso and legs.

I don't think they hunch, I think their neck contract or something like that.. or else when they weren't hunching they're be alot of free space in their armour and it would probably slip around.
