Curious on why they did not retreat to the Shield Worlds before the firing of the Rings so they could live on, unless they did that I am not aware of, if so, could anyone point it out?

Another thing, why didn't they copy a piece of their own DNA?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

They all fled the galaxy or perished by the Halo rings.

Ignore my gamertag. It's actually Dragonzzilla.

Good question. I guess they're were so busy with the Flood; or that they knew it was there time to leave, leaving the Mantle to Humanity.

"Were it so easy..." -Thel Vadame.

Couldn't they have just camped on the Ark until the flood was proposed to be extinct and then re inhabit their ancestor's worlds? Or am I missing something- did the Ark give off some kind of reaction like the rings? I thought the Ark was just the HQ of the rings and just produced rings/activated them.

They'd run out of time, or so I've heard and gather from my readings of the Terminals and the like before Cryptum came out. And there are loads of Shield Worlds we haven't seen, we haven't even really seen much of Onyx's Shield World either, it's entirely possible that there are still Forerunners somewhere int he galaxy, or beyond the Milky Way.

Marine Sanders
Major 1st Division U.S.M.C.

You cannot exaggerate about the Marines. They are convinced to the point of arrogance, that they are the most ferocious fighters on earth- and the amusing thing about it is that they are.

It was due to the fact that most of the Forerunners had been killed by the flood before they could use them. The last few Forerunners felt that it was necessary to save what they could even if that meant their own extinction.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

I have seen you future

It is possible that the Forerunners inhabited the shield worlds and have since left, either to another galaxy or simply a different part of the galaxy.

They could have only had time to fill some of the shield worlds, so the ones we have seen (Onyx and the one from Halo Wars) were empty.

They could, as has long been the prevailing theory, either have been wiped out by the array, or fled the galaxy in shame.

Gamer by heart, Furry by soul

I thought Cryptum stated that the Didact had built numerous Shield Worlds, but that they were hidden. This was the reason he got killed on the San 'Shyuum homeworld by Faber.
