These two sides are incredibly dim-witted. While they have the techology to make giant cannons that destory ships, and make a mobile city that travels through space, neither of these sides ever made robots. Yes, robots. They could send some sort of robot down to clean out rooms, scout an area, without having the need to waste troops. Who else agrees?

I realise they may not have had the parts or time, but if they have the time to salvage wreckage from crash sites (Say when a phantom goes down?) they should have the parts.

They also spend ages wasting time glassing a planet for no apparent reason.

So are spartans. And ODSTs. AND REPAIRS to their sdhips. They should have been able to make them.

You apparently don't understand Halo that well. The Covenant felt the need to cleanse planets of any unholy infection (in this case, us) because we were an afront to their Gods.

See a lot of people don't seem to think things through about why the ground forces of the UNSC aren't as "advanced" as ours. Now think about it: If the UNSC can simply blast any place they want on a planet into oblivion from space at any time, why would they ever need to go groundside? Groundside operations were exclusive to things like civilian evac operations, recon and intel gathering, and security.

Which is why almost the entire Human-Covenant War was in space (which also seems to be a little known fact). When your enemy religiously incinerates planets, you don't want to be caught on the ground for too long.

Besides: the UNSC DOES have robotic military androids. The fighters you see in ODST are automated recon and close airsupport combat drones (they make this point in the Encyclopedia).

As for the Covenant, similar reasons plus one more. The Covenant had an odd aversion to AIs and only very rarely would they have one. Its generally reasoned because they feel--as mere mortals--creating AIs or Oracles would be discrediting their Gods' power, who could create fully sentient AIs.

  • 03.24.2011 5:14 AM PDT

Indeed, the UNSC could have a batallion (1000 or so) robotic soldiers, commanded by a dumb military AI. This would even out the numerical advantage the covenant have by giving the UNSC an equivilent of "Grunts".

Or they could have a squad of robotic ships or fighters commanded by aforementioned AI that have a much greater firepower-to-size ratio due to the fact they dont have to have squishy humans aboard. Again evening out the playing field in space.

The covenant have an excuse, it goes against their religion, the very core of their cultural values. Not to mention they have zero capacity for invention and out-of-the-box ideas.
The UNSC however are dummed down for balancing purposes. Durhuur humons R stoopid!

Robots = UNSC S.T.A.R.S., Black Widow Surveillance System... There are robots.

Umm, the UNSC *Does* have robots, drone fighters, JOTUNs etc, they just don't have terminator-style robot infantry. Which is frankly not all that dumb at all, as a living soldier is going to vastly more useful in the wide variety of situations that a soldier encounters.

AI's are at a premium in Halo, and seem to be quite tricky and expensive to make, so you aren't going to be making your hypothetical terminators human-level smart anytime soon.
And trying to link them all up to a milspec AI in a control centre somewhere a la the Trade Federation from SW is just asking to be hacked.

The part that would be the limiting factor would be the AI core.

The Covenant burning worlds for religeous reasons has already been covered.

Having Terminator style attack robots seem rather unfeasible given how expensive AIs are in general...

Not to mention how limited their combat functions would be in the hands of a dumb AI. Sure a dumb AI is smart in its field, but it's still limited in that field even. Halsey's AI at the beginning of The Fall of Reach was already put through its paces for trying to acknowledge more than three commands at once. Imagine how strained it would be trying to constantly adapt to a variety of combat situation for a multitude of drones...And again having it occupy and focus on one individual drone while potentially effective would likely have been far too costly compared to outfitting a human being with a gun and uniform.

Not to mention a good portion of materials that go into ship production, vehicles, and other things whilst resources become more and more scare or no longer accessible...

Yeah, there are several reasons why it would be stupid to commit resources to robots.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Metal + Plasma = Bad

Robots would be useless since the plasma fire would melt them in no time, imagine all those resources wasted just to have the "superior robots" just stand there firing before being overwhelmed with overcharged shots of plasma pistols.

Odds are the UNSC has all sorts of combat drones. We just haven't seen many because the books haven't gone into much detail about standard UNSC ground operations.

Flesh + Plasma = Bad

As several people have said before, AIs are expensive and robot soldiers do not have the adaptability of real people (unless you have a very expensive smart AI, which takes a human brain to make anyway).

  • 03.24.2011 4:01 PM PDT

Robots aren't as combat effective as human soldiers.

At least, not humanoid robots. And only humanoids could really use UNSC weapons, six wheeled or insects would have to have special weapons grafted onto a swivel, which wouldn't work vey well.

Most of you are saying how it's so expensive.....

It was the middle of a freaking war. Why is money so important? In star trek, they had abolished the money system a century BEFORE 2552. They just makes Humanity STUPID!

You can't just wake up one morning and say "every thing is now free, you won't be paid for your services now get back to work."

Things will still cost something to make whether its time, resources, or man power.

Paper currency is hardly what makes it expensive. Think before you post. You're forgetting that raw resources don't magically spring up like daisies.

Monetary funds are the least of anyone's worries. It would be using up raw material to construct things over others. Those resources are finite, and humanity is hard pressed into distributing those resources as the war begins to take its toll as planets, facilities, and lives dwindle.

Because Star Trek is the be all end all law for science fiction cultures, right?

Humanity in Trek had just come out of WWIII, it was devestated. Then the Vulcans showed up and we formed a mutual alliance, evolving into a no-currency system. They had outside help.

UNSC (which is still the United Nations) or more specifically the UEG didn't. Halo's humanity is actually a very realistic portrayal of the future if you think about it. We try not to focus on war but rather colonial expansion. What war there is we counter with space superiority. We have no alien enemies to fight (meaning foreign) until the Covenant. War isn't a major issue.
