Subject: So I just got Halo CE and I don't like using the Mouse...

So I was wondering if I would be able to use and Xbox Controller or a 360 controller with it. It is compatible?

Of course, silly. Microsoft products love each other.

Controls on the PC version in general aren't as fluid as on Xbox though. Xbox is specifically designed to track the joysticks, and you'll move in whatever direction you point the walking stick in. However since the PC version is designed to use the arrow keys, it is limited to only 8 directions, and you'll start to feel like you're on a track when using the controller (even the keys feel that way TBH). As far as looking goes, you know how on Xbox you start to nudge it a little and it goes slowly, then speeds up the farther you push the stick? Yeah well there are only two looking speeds on PC controller mode - on and off. Look at full speed or don't look at all.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

This part isn't accurate. Looking around with the right analog stick on a controller is virtually identical to the way it is on Xbox. You're right about movement, though. Also, there's no aim-assist in Halo PC no matter what input you use.

I've never seen it act that way, and most people I talk to agree that they've experienced it the same way I have :/

Actually there is. PC gamers like to tell themselves that there isn't any, but in every PC game I've ever played (FPS) there is aim assist. You would be shocked to play with none.

inb4 you say there isn't any: I've seen the numbers the engine uses to decide how close you have to be looking for autoaim to kick in (it's actually called that).

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

Lazer55, there is no aim assist in Halo PC.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

There's only slight bullet magnatism, but it's nowhere near the level Halo 2 gives you for free.

There is aim assist, you'd have to be blind to not notice it.

There is autoaim, but it's not cursor drag like you get on console games, it's bullet magnetism. The cursor doesn't move, but the bullet pulls it's vector towards the target once you're aiming a certain distance from the enemy.

^ This.

And it's just as effective, TBH.

I'm pretty sensitive about controls in games, but maybe I missed the imperceptible aim assist and/or bullet magnetism you're talking about. I can see it plain as day in Halo games, and in Borderlands... oh, and Half-Life 2 if played on easy mode.

For Halo PC, I've played with the 360 controller, a PS3 controller and Logitech Rumblepad. I always had gradient control when looking around with the analog. Move it slightly and you turn very slowly, the farther you move it the faster you turn, and after a certain threshold the turn acceleration kicks in so you can turn around and face the guy that kills you as soon as you see his face. I have literally had an Xbox running side by side with my PC to compare. That's my 2 bits.

PS, is there any bullet magnetism when playing UT/UT2004 online? How about Nexuiz?

This is true. It's even on Halo: Combat Evolved. There's not much at all, though. It's not very noticeable. It works as if the enemy has a gravity field around them. Here's the video showing it. I could call this "Halo PC slightly Noobified" (Just a joke.)

Definitely no bullet magnetism in UT/UT2004. I believe there is on UT3, though. UT99 was a great game..... You've made me want to go out and buy it again. Amazon here I come!

How do you get the 360 Controller to work with the Computer?

It's pretty easy. Here, I Googled it for you, because I couldn't remember the exact process, but it's pretty simple, iirc.

Yes. You can use a wired XBox 360 controller

Do you need a wired controller?

Noobs can't handle AR/Pistol Spawns.

Aim assist in Halo PC is called Aimbot, and no one likes aimbotters.

Bullet Magnetism =/= Aim Assist

Pretty much. Bullet magnetism is a required part of HPC. If you want to know how hard it is to shoot without magnetism, try shooting your own team. It's not easy or fun.

Magnetism isn't there to 'noobify' the game, it's there to make sure the game mechanics actually work.

Do you need a wired controller?

Wired controllers can be used on your computer with no adapters, just plug it in and if you're running Vista or higher, the drivers should be downloaded automatically.

For a wireless controller, you'd need to buy an adapter that plugs into the computer. More of a hassle than it's worth, TBH, and I'd say just go with wired.

So it is normal that when sometimes I'm pushing forward I start to go diagonally all of a sudden?

I'm always falling off narrow cat-walks because of this. Like I'm pushing forward and all of sudden I'll go diagonal slightly. Then I'm going forward and to the side a little and before I know it I'm falling off the catwalk and probably dying as a result of being disoriented. I thought maybe my 360 controller was broken as far as the PC version is concerned.

I love the game but this sorta makes it unplayable for me.

Is it just me? Am I doing something wrong? I don't have this problem on the console version.

And playing Halo with a mouse/kb? No. I'm left handed and I use my mouse with my right hand, which is fine for computer applications but it would take to much re-learning to achieve the fine aiming Halo involves.

The look stick on the controller feels really natural though. No complaints there. Maybe there is an application I can download with some settings to make the movement stick feel right. Anyone know of a program and can recommend some settings?
