"The Lone Wolf, that's what they call it. It works undercover, doing anything possible that the Innies order it to do. They've put something around its neck so it cant run or kill major Paterson who controls it. " The interrogated insurrectionist stopped. The UNSC marines glared and pulled their M6Ds from their holsters and aimed at the Innie's head. "TALK!" one marine shouted, "what's his name, his REAL name?"
"uh..." the Insurrectionist paused, "petty officer Spartan-137." the marines looked at each other in fright, "where is the Innie hiding place?!"
"the largest meteor near Eridanus II." One turned and shot the Innie in the forehead. "we have to warn doctor Halsey." the first marine, corporal Johnny Holmes, nudged the other, corporal Jack Homer know to his friends as the Jack. They ran down the long corridor as privates quickly saluted as they passed. They turned the corner and sped onto the UNSC destroyer Corsair that was on standby to take off. They searched the ship for doctor Halsey until they found her on the bridge with 1st lieutenant Gibson. The lieutenant shot a confused look at them as they saluted. "ma'am we're here to talk to you."
The UNSC destroyer Corsair had entered slipspace. Many were in cryo-chambers, sleeping the endless slipspace feeling away in a frozen pod. Dr Halsey had got to work soon after the two UNSC marines had informed her about Spartan-137. She had mumbled something to herself and walked off towards the bridge door. 2 squads of ODSTs and the two marines that had interrogated the insurrectionist. Their mission was to locate Spartan-137, capture Major Paterson, disable controlling collar on the Spartans neck and extract at a safe location. "sounds easy," one of the Hell jumpers grunted, "apart from the tagging marines, here doggies come with us." The ODSTs laughed and spluttered. The marines ignored them and started to strap on the ODST armour. When they had finished the largest ODST walked up to them both and slapped them on the back, "welcome to the squad rookies, hope you survive the first jump!" with that he spun around and walked back to the gang of hell jumpers. One of the marines turned around and saw all of the ODST's tattoos. They read 'Hell jumpers, feet first into hell'. They slowly got into their armour when the alarm called. The sergeant led them to their pods and got into their own. They were to be jettisoned into the Insurrectionist's meteor hangar when it is open to let in supply goods from other insurrectionist controlled worlds. The hangar only opened for 10mins before it shuts and if they are spotted an EMP pulse is shot and the hangar door automatically shuts. It was a long shot but they had to save the Spartan. The marines were hoping for other Spartan back-up, this mission would be almost impossible without it. To get them at the right angle the ship needs to be rolled onto it's side for a shot period of time. The start of the operation is entirely controlled by an AI. The pod that held Jack, shook. The radio crackled, "impact in five minutes." Jack passed out with the speed and force of the pod's chute. He woke with the sound of gun fire. The had been spotted on impact by the very Spartan they had come to rescue. It was like it had been possessed, it rolled and fired at him as he scrambled out off his drop pod and hid behind it. Jack looked around he saw 4 dead and two casualties, one of them was Johnny. That left 5 ODST's and him. He regrouped with the others, keeping his head down as he sprinted for cover. "what are we going to do sir," he gasped.
"we're trying to flank the Spartan. You two," he pointed at Jack and another ODST, "keep the thing distracted while we take it from behind."
"wait," Jack shouted, "might I suggest you head for the Major first."
"OHRAH!" the other ODSTs called. They ended up going with the Jack's plan.
The other Insurrectionists shook away their confusion and drew their weapons to protect their leader and drive away the intruders. The soldiers were terribly outnumbered. The ODST started to retreat, the others followed him out out of the large rock building carrying the unconscious Major. The Spartan had stopped firing at them and turned to fire at the Innies. It followed the ODSTs out of the hangar they quickly sealed and locked their armour and looked around, "how are we going to get outta here?" one of the ODST spoke through the radio. "look!" Jack pointed into the distance towards another meteor, "if we launch ourselves from here then we might make it." one of the ODSTs laughed, "well it's a long shot but....what do you think Mike, Corey, Hunter? Think it's worth it?" Mike stepped forward, "well I dunno Jake, shouldn't we count our casualties?" they sat on the edge of the hangar, "Jake, we lost the Gunny Sarge." Jack bit his lip.
"that puts me in charge," Jake stood up, "lets go with the corporal's plan."
Jack sat near the Spartan in the pelican. The had been located and were brought back to UNSC Corsair, where they were to be sent into the medical bay. He couldn't help glancing at the Spartan, its sheer size and strength, its swift but delicate movements and its masked face that could spook the toughest of warriors. Jack also noticed the ODSTs were glaring at the Spartan with pure hatred painted on their scarred faces. The pelican shuddered to a halt, and the door opened. The ODSTs stepped out first, the Spartan last. The Spartan went straight to the lieutenant's office. When it passed jack it stopped, "come with me corporal." Jack saluted, "yessir."
They had been put on another mission. Jack had been promoted to corporal grade 3 and had been put in a squad. They were to provide support on harvest to other marines including sergeant Forge and red team, a Spartan trio consisting of Alice-130, Douglas-042 and Jerome-092. This was Jack's first time on harvest and his first skirmish against the aliens known as the Covenant.
The pelican shook under fire from Covenant anti-air turrets. Jack felt sick from the extreme turbulence, the pelican dived and hit the ground. It rolled and spilled it's goods onto the hard, icy ground the hatch fell open and Jack dove out, along with the Spartan. He hit the ground and tumbled over the edge of a cliff. He was sure this was the end and he hadn't even glanced at the Covenant. The Spartan grabbed Jack's BR55 that was slung on his back and hauled him to safety. Jack lay panting. he stared into the Spartan's gold, mirrored visor and eventually got up, "thanks." he gasped. The Spartan nodded back and walked over to a cluster of weapon caches, yanking out a SRS99C-S2 AMB sniper rifle and a M41 SSR MAV/AW rocket launcher which he passed to Jack. Then it started to run with jack tagging behind. Jack pulled out his radio and attempted to contact this sergeant forge guy. Nothing. He caught up to the Spartan who had stopped at a large boulder and he peered over the rock. There before them lay a huge Covenant supply base. Jack activated his beacon and turned to the Spartan, "they'll find it and they'll destroy the base." the Spartan shook his head, "it's not as simple as that," he took the beacon from Jack's hands, dropped it on the ground and crushed it underfoot, "they will think your in trouble so they will come with a pelican or warthog, which will be unaware of the base and will be destroyed by the Covenant AA and AV turrets." Jack gulped. "sorry sir," he whispered. The Spartan turned left and ran away from the base, Jack ran silently after him.
Four hours later they came to a forerunner structure. It was working and in use so they climbed inside it and the Spartan activated the beacon. Jack took off the heavy backpack and put down his BR55 that was slung on his shoulder. Jack sighed with exhaustion, lay down and slowly nodded off.
He was woken by the Spartan's leather glove tapping his shoulder. He sat up and looked at the Spartan. "Covenant," the Spartan hissed and pointed through a small hole in the large metal structure. Sure enough in the darkness Jack saw three small hermit crab looking things that barked and grunted like a dog, two bird like creatures that wielded round energy shields and two tall indescribable warriors that carried energy swords and had split lips. "what are they?"
"the short ones with the methane tanks are Grunts, the thin ones with shields are Jackals, and the tall one with the split lips are Elites," the Spartan whispered. The Spartan pushed Jack's rocket launcher through the hole and fired.
