The Forerunner Dreadnought obliterated everything.

Observe

Does anyone realize the god damn thing was weaponless? The Dreadnought's only offensive role was that of a morale booster.

RAMMING SPEED, ACTIVATE!

Though honestly I don't see that doing anything unless the UNSC ships got in the path of it. I doubt truth would steer the dreadnaught just to ram through the defenses.

WE all knwo this and we still keep stating the fact UNSC weaponry cannot harm forerunner alloy. Sure I won't go as far to say the NOVA bomb wouldn't destroy it, but it would take something on that scale of devastation to go head to head with it and we don't have that on standby.

The main point is the forerunner ship could have just flew straight through MAC stations like air and the rest of the covenant could have followed.

Well, seeing as the portal was in the gap of the defenses already, and how they viewed Forerunners, I simply don't see Truth actively ramming super MAC stations and ships unless they were dead between him and the portal.

remember that true is leading the brute fleet, they really wouldn't give a damn.

They are like the "perfect" dogs, they will do any and anything told 100 percent of the time. Or atleast the faction of brutes truth led.

^ I agree. I don't see Truth putting his "Relic" at risk by using it as a cudgel.

yes the thing is staggeringly massive but I don't think he swatted all the SMACs down with it.

If that single ship could have been used hit and run tactics to destroy entire fleets of elite ships, i am postive That the ship could have just ran through every MAC platform in orbit with litte to no damage, hell covie ships "walk" right through human ships all the time.

We don't even know if it has shields, if it does then i am 100 percent positive it could just fly through all MACs in orbit.

  • 03.26.2011 11:35 AM PDT

What a waste....

I think they pulled a High Charity.

I.E., they jumped right above the atmosphere, right below the ODPs. Thus, they were able to sneak past without being completely pwned.

Look at the size of the freaking thing. MAC platforms could hardly take down Carriers half the size, I'm sure the Dreadnought could have easily punched through without a problem.

CoD is a good game, even if the Halo series are better in some aspects. Anyone who insults either is just bad in that game. Grow up.

Am I actually the only one seeing all of the inaccuracies in the OP? Earth didn't have "thousands of ships"...it had just over 100 UNSC ships, probably less than the fleet at Reach.

The Orbital Defense Platforms have never been explicitly said to ALL be SMACs, we only know that the few stations mentioned in Halo 2 are indeed SMACs.

Truth had more than 30 ships...There may only have been 30 ships at the Ark, but there were far more ships at Earth. We don't know the exact number, all we know is that it is "massive", since the fleet at High Charity is known to comprise of hundreds of ships, and that's where Truth was prior to the invasion of Earth, even a fraction of it would have been a impressive force.

Why is everyone so focused on the Dreadnought? You do realize that by the time the Dreadnought was used, it was by the end of Halo 2? That means the battle of Earth has been going on for a while at that point, meaning that there definitely would be losses in the UNSC forces.

The problem here isn't how Truth got through in Halo 3, but rather how Regret did in the beginning of Halo 2 with his 15 ships. I would only agree that Regret's fleet probably got obliterated, and the only reason his own flagship was not destroyed because he escaped into the atmosphere without doing actual battle with the UNSC.

Still, this is a point I bring up often when people argue that the novels make the Covenant appear too strong; since the game itself has also portrayed an instance of superior covenant strength(or UNSC incompetence).

  • 03.26.2011 1:19 PM PDT

Why the hell is this a hot topic? Why the hell are people still arguing? Why the hell are most people completely ignorant?

All this "Truth rammed his way through a small hole in the grid" talk is nonsense. The battle of Earth lasted for a month. It was a global engagement. It ended with a global bombardment. The entire solar UNSC fleet was involved, and destroyed. The entire orbital defense grid was annihilated.

The battle was a gargantuan encounter with hundreds of ships on both sides. This is fact.

The world is full of mysteries, and shares too few of the answers required. An example of which, is how did I end up in the Brute Zone?

I blame the virgins....

Stupid Virgins...can't even aim MAC Cannons straight

I blame stosh.

  • 03.26.2011 1:43 PM PDT

I know!!! lets fire super massive MAC rounds from orbit TOWARDS EARTH....
I'm glad your not a military strategist.

And before you say "duh, shoot them before the get close," get learn'd:

While aboard,(The Ascendant Justice) Cortana successfully completed the first known in-atmosphere slipspace jump, usually impossible due to the inter-lapping gravitation fields. This information was later leaked to the Covenant fleet around Reach by the ship's AI. In-atmosphere Slipspace jumps were subsequently performed by Covenant forces during the Battle of Earth.

two words:
plasma torpedos
they have more range than a mac and they are stronger then archer missiles (witch are the enought to destroy easily any UNSC vessel)

  • 03.26.2011 4:56 PM PDT

Regrets fleet pretty much took care of the UNSC fleet, Truth's fleet took care of the rest.

The Covenant had more than 30 ships, that is for sure, add to the fact that one cruiser can take on 3 frigates, it's even more assumable that the Covenant could easily go through the fleet.

The SMAC's are an easy thing, they only destroyed 2, all it takes. The 300 SMAC stations were around the whole earth, even then they are spread far too thin, once they destroyed those 2, they put a hole in the defense and went in through there.

How exactly did the Prohpet of Truth manage to break through Earth's defenses in 2552? Earth was the most heavily defended Human planet, with hundreds if not thousands of War Ships ( Dozens upon dozens of Marathon class Cruisers are seen in Halo 2 ), Hundreds of Frigates, as well as 298 Orbital Defense Platforms.

Reach had possibly more than that, they still broke through.

Truth had 30 Ships ( It was revealed at the Ark that Truth had 3 times as many ships as the Elites, who only had 10 ).

Okay this is where the logic breaks apart, Truth's fleet had that many ships after the invasion of earth, when they went through the ark.

Which means that they had more and had 30 or so left after the fleet's invasion.

The ODP's alone outnumbered Truth's fleet, as well as only taking 5 seconds to reload ( 12 Ships destroyed every minute, which gives the possibility of 3576 ships destroyed in 5 Seconds with all the ODP's firing ).

Wait what? 3,576 ships destroyed within 5 seconds!!!

1) Not all the orbital stations are in the same area of space as each other, they are in battle clusters spread across the circumference of the earth, not all clustered in one area.

2) They don't always hit their targets, nor do they always completely kill the ship without preventing it from killing them.

3) They lost a lot of orbital stations with the prophet of regret's fleet, which destroyed a certain amount, and some of the ships broke through their defenses and went in atmosphere (specifically regrets ship). So that means there is a hole for the prophet of regret to enter through.

4) Speculation leads to you thinking the canon is wrong. Please spend the time thinking through every possibility you can before saying "Wait didn't this mean that?".

one covenat crusier could destroy about ten unsc frigits and it was a larger fleet then the one that had attacked reach

Umm, Regret wiped out a ton of ships as you can see in ODST, probably twenty or so.(You can see at least five destroyed based on memory, and we don't see what's behind us).

And we know a lot of mac platforms were destroyed.

Regret only destroyed two MAC platforms, but that's enough for the Dreadnought to simply fly on by.

We're forgetting one important fact: The UNSC knew Master Chief was aboard, that's why they didn't shoot it! Why would they risk killing their most valuable asset?

Two Words:

Forerunner Dreadnought.

That thing plowed through Earth's defenses. The whole space around Earth was filled with debris from Regret's Fleet and now it had UNSC engaging Truth's fleet.

Plus, ship based MAC cannons dont inflict any damage on the Forerunner dreadnought, as shown in Halo 3. I have no idea, but I guess it could witstand a shot even from a Super MAC Orbital Station.

Ship based MAC =/= Mark V Super MAC

I'm also referring to Truth's fleet of Covenant Ships, not the Dreadnought ( Which is weaponless ).

There has never been confirmation that the Dreadnought was undamaged, only that it was still operational. The MAC blasts that impacted it were the size of Assault Carriers.
You can't just say "Well, not including that!" That ship wiped us out.

Reach only had 152 Warships and 20 Orbital Defense Platforms. The Covenant had 314 Ships, and only three dozen of them survived, showing the power of the ODP's.
