Attention. It has come to my understanding that bungie sold the title of Halo. I know it happened a while ago but hear me out. This could be a benifite. Microsoft has the rights to make Halo 4 (or Halo 5 if you count Reach and the others like ODST and Wars). Think about this. Marathon will be brought back by Bungie studios. It will be back and better than ever. Until then have good spirit and keep playing Reach (its a friggin' awesome game).

...And so the hero crawled through the fissure on the surface of Tyr. There, the lone Dwarf stared into the cold, dark eyes of Soulblighter...The fiend hefted his blade over his shoulder as a flock of raven took upon his form...

-TBG-

In my opinion, they probably won't ever reboot Marathon. There just isn't a good player database of today's gamers for the Marathon series. Sure, there may be remakes like Durandal on the Aracade, but as far as the trilogy goes, what's done is done. Besides, Bungie is already working on their new IP, which I hear is some sort of "MMO", which means constant updating as they'll focus all their attention on that title.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

I have seen you future

Bungie has said that they are working on a completely new IP. Bungie probably wants the creative freedom that comes with making a new universe.

Yeah I geuss your right. This "MMO" may actually be really fun.

When I grow up, I want to be just like goofenhour.

Though there is a lack of sources, I really kind of believe that the next game will be related to Marathon a lot or very loosely. I really don't have a lot of evidence, but I just kind of have a feeling from the stuff we learned.

First, thing, was Bungie updated their copyright of the Marathon Symbol about a year ago.

Second, on a podcast with Matt Noguchi (the 12/18/2009 around 1:27:00), they were talking about the how Matt is working on the new IP, and how they can say that the game is not Halo.

Sketch said something like "And what you are working on is not Halo related."
Urk then says "Yeah, it's new."
Matt's response is "Well, it's not Halo."
And then Sketch seemed to start filling the void with fluff and drops the subject as quickly as he can and tries to move on to another subject. Luke starts laughing.
And then later said "Just trying to keep things moving here."

My third piece of evidence is the fact that the Marathon symbol was not placed in the Halo: Reach emblem inventory. It is the only Bungie Symbol related symbol from Halo 2 not to be put in Halo 2. Also, the nameplate from Halo: Reach for Marathon 2:Durandal was replaced with another Marathon icon, rather than the Marathon Symbol.

I don't know really, I just have a feeling.

While Marathon is an IP well know to old Bungie fans, it's barely known by others. I don't see much of a market for it, especially since there are already so much first person shooters. It wouldn't be wise to make another Marathon.

I believe it was a well known title to most gamers back in the early 90's. It was up there with Doom, Wolfenstein, and FPS at the time. The reason I think it wasn't the best known FPS at the time (like Doom) was because it was a Mac title. It still was known as an amazing game at the time, just to old gamers. New gamers don't really know anything about.

And if I were to say a new company were to come out with a FPS, then I would say there isn't a large market for it. But if it is a FPS made by Bungie, then I think there would be a large market for it.

Kind of like RTS's. Take your average RTS that is made, then it's just another RTS. Put Blizzard on the box, the game is huge.

Maybe it is known well enough but how many have any actual interest in playing the original or a new one? I don't know the answer to that question but I can't imagine it's high. Personally I have never seen people show any interest in Marathon outside of old Bungie supporters and those who know gaming history well.

A name can be enough to garnish support for a game and maybe Bungie's name would be enough for Marathon but there is no real way to know.

Possible but unlikely. Bungie hasn't shown any interest in going back to their older series. Also Marathon is what, ten years old? FPS's have improved alot since then and rebooting Marathon with newer gameplay mechanics might not be a good idea. And will most likely piss off its fans. I haven't played it myself so I don't know for sure.

Will they make another Marathon?

No. Not unless they are wholly unoriginal, mindless bivalves. Despite the last four Halo games, I'd like to believe they aren't, so no, there will be no more Marathon.

Besides, anyone who has played the games, and paid attention enough to follow the story (key point, that), knows that another title in the series is unneeded and would be entirely forced. Anyone who says it'll "be back and better than ever" hasn't played the games (and if they have, never bothered to read the terminals closely), or simply don't appreciate the trilogy for what it is.

Any theories to the contrary rely solely on coincidental occurrences, hear-say, and speculation based on tongue-in-cheek references; largely enlightened by only little, if any, knowledge of the Marathon universe, canon, or games.

Yes, that will be Halo 4. Chief is the Security Officer.

Hardly. Even if you want to count the coincidental similarities as intended, the number of differences that remain are legion.

I'm getting tired of people stating these ridiculous notions. Marathon and Halo are not part of the same universe.

Good thing the Ark explosion blasted Chief to the Marathon universe and drifted the cargo bay to Marathon's Mars.

Nope. It points out similarities while ignoring all the differences.

That thread is so speculative it's not even funny. If Master Chief is the Cyborg why did he choose to wear the inferior armour that the Cyborg wears in Marathon? Why would the com device (if it really is the com device because honestly it just looks like a random piece of circuitry) be floating randomly in the ship? Why would the planet that Chief is nearby have forerunner symbols, symbols that are not in the entirety of the Marathon games?

It's a nice theory, but that's all it is, a theory. One that states a lot of things, but does nothing to prove counter arguments wrong.

To stay on topic another Marathon is not even really possible unless it was a remake/reboot which honestly I'd rather not see.

Why can't anyone support Bungie making a totally new story and game.

I swear they can do it, they did it before.

I love Infinity! I was one of those lucky souls to get my copy a day before the published release date, and I haven't stopped playing it since. My only concern is that since it is called "Infinity" instead of, say, "Marathon 3," that there aren't going to be any more. Please tell me this isn't true and that you already have another in the works!

Ben-

Imagine a painting of a horse, a marvellous white stallion. This stallion happens to be lying in a crumpled heap on the ground, dead. And Bungie employees are standing around it in a semicircle, beating the horse with various blunt objects. The painting is titled "Marathon 4."

Well, okay, that's overstating things. We're very proud of the Marathon series, but it's not the only thing we can do. Rather than getting into a rut and spitting out a new Marathon game every year, we're going to try some new stuff.

Some gut-wrenchingly cool new stuff.

Stand back and prepare to be amazed.

There's already dozens of fan made sequels, some even better than the originals (Marathon: Rubicon X, for example). There's even a modernized multiplayer-only version of Marathon that uses the unreal engine. I'm not sure what it's status is but still. They really don't need to make any more.
