Subject: Thoughts on Halo evolutions?

The Razor.

For the honour of the Mirratord.

Evolutions and Cryptum, the two latest Halo novels, are among the best in the entire series; the latter IS the best.

I didn't particularly like Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss, Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian or Palice Hotel. The ones I would re-read are Dirt, Headhunters, Blunt Instruments, The Mona Lisa, The Impossible Life and Death of Preston J. Cole and the Return. Anything I left out is because I neither like or dislike.

That being said, they all add to the universe in their own way and in that respect they were all good.

I didn't particularly like Palace Hotel either, the story was a little on the weak side and all the sounding out of stuff like LAV was annoying as hell! That was the only one I really didn't like.

My favorites though would probably be Dirt, Mona Lisa, Human Weakness, the Impossible Life and Probable Death of Preston J. Cole, and Blunt Instruments. But yeah, I thought all the stories were really good in their own way. I need to try and find the edition with Soma the Painter and Wages of Sin, so I can read those too.

Haha its good to hear everyone talk good about these stories so let me get this straight there are two volumes of Evolutions??

  • 04.10.2011 1:57 PM PDT

The soldiers, the lovers, the cowards, the brave
We're all on this world, we got what we gave

No: There's one volume, but it has eight stories, a few pictures, and a few poems. Well worth the fifteen bucks. I read some stories about 5 times :D My faves are: Mona Lisa, The Return, and the one that features Cortana. It's very psychological, and it makes you wonder who the main bad guy of the next Halo is going to be... (Cortana!?!?!)

They divided the original book into two volumes and added two more stories to one of them, I think, don't quote me on that.

Here's a short summary (avoiding spoilers) of the stories.

Pariah: Deformed dog-like spartan given a desk job.
Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss: ONI Agent in Brute captivity.
Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian: ODST fights an entire ship full of Covenenat, with a twist.
Dirt: Amazing, saying anything about it would ruin it.
Headhunters: Two Spartan IIIs deep into enemy lines.
Blunt Instruments: Spartan Team Black befriends a drone and name him Hopalong.
Mona Lisa: See note about Dirt. This is the longest story and easily the best.
Palace Hotel: Master Chief can't remembe rhis last name but he remembers a childhood friend.
Human Weakness: Cortana in the Gravemind's custody. Pretty good.
The Impossible Life and the Possible Death of Preston J. Cole: See title, pretty self explanatory, and awesome.
The Return: Follows a bipolar elite walking across a glassed planet.

The ones I bolded and italicized are the only ones I considered even worth reading. I would say get it, but don't expect too much from it.

Just got the Evolutions book only not the forrunner one so i dont get sucked in them to much and forget to do calculus.

Read the first story pariah so far and man that must have been one of the darkest stories. I mean not much action but really dark and kinda depressing

The Razor.

For the honour of the Mirratord.

The best stories in Evolutions in my opinion are "Headhunters", "Human Weakness" and "The Impossible Life and Possible Death of Preston J. Cole". The only ones I don't like much are "Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss", "Midnight at the Heart of the Midlothian" and "Palace Hotel". All the others are somewhere between average and pretty good.

A decent read to pass the time.

Several that MMO mentioned could be expanded into a full length novel (Cole already done) or made into a movie.

If I recall correctly, it is simply an extra story or two. Definitely a cash grab, charging full price for a few extra pages.

The extra content that I know of are two stories. One is called "The Wages of Sin" and is a story about a Prophet's last hours on the Flood infested High Charity, and the other story is "Soma the Painter" which is set in the Forerunner era and details the Forerunner's first real encounter with the Flood. Other than that i can't really say what the two stories are about as I haven't read them :/

The Mona Lisa...*shivers*...is an amazing, mysterious story about The Flood. It was my favorite story. It starts off a bit slow, but it's so good.
if they made a movie about it it would be the new Alien it was so epic

Definitely, it has all the same makings of a survival horror movie like Alien was, they'd probably need to make an actual real ending for it though if it was made into a real movie :P

Well, if it were up to me, I'd leave the ending the same. I thought it was great. I couldn't see it ending any other way. They can just have Lopez and Henry just about to fight, then black screen. Story over. lol. That's how I'd like it to be.

Heh, if it were me I'd want a more concrete ending, like either Lopez and "Henry" both die, or one of them makes it off. I don't really like vague endings, I'd prefer a "happy" one or a sad ending to a "cliffhanger".

I mean yeah we can accurately guess how it went down, but I'd like something concrete for an ending.
