I fail to see how the Forerunners could of won.

Because they probably had access to Neural technology, which we know is the onnly thing that can destroy them.

No, the Forerunners used light based weaponry, even until late in the Forerunner-Flood war. The only neural technology, I think, are the rings, which were made specifically for the flood. The rings did rid 3 radii of the galaxy of Precursor artifacts but the war had been long before even the construction of the ring started.

Well for one, the Rings were being designed long before Forerunner-Flood first contact. It was likely a weapon designed to counter humanity's structures on Precursor worlds, since they were impenetrable to Forerunner weaponry. They weren't built for the Flood.

And second, you have to consider that the Precursor-Forerunner War (if it happened at all, but more on that in a bit) happened millions of years before the Forerunners time in Cryptum. So long ago that they don't remember it.

It'd be a bit naive to think Forerunners only ever used light and plasma weapons and nothing else over a span of several million years. Especially so far back in time where all history had been lost to them. Certain weapons and technologies could've been lost as well.

Now I actually doubt the war even happened. At the very least am slightly skeptical. This is due to who the Captive is. You may have read some prety strong theories regarding that the Captive's identity is the (future) Gravemind. I'm not gonna get into it, but of he is, then take everything he says with a grain of salt.
