Hi,

Whenever I join a multiplayer game, I suffer really severe lag, and after about 10 seconds, I can't move or shoot at all (I can just look around). A semi-transparent icon featuring an Ethernet port with a red X over it appears in the lower right-hand corner of my screen. Then, after a few seconds more of this, I receive an error message stating, "The game has closed down," when in fact, the game has not closed down. This happens every time I attempt to connect to a multiplayer game, without fail.

In case you're wondering, GameSpy is not installed.

I have forwarded ports 2302-2400 in both my router (hardware) and software firewalls. I have a wired internet connection with 10/100/1000 Mbps on-board LAN and high-speed Roadrunner service.

I have also experienced these same symptoms on other computers in my home network.

I am not a hardcore gamer, but I have no trouble joining and playing other internet multiplayer games, like Star Trek: Elite Force 1 & 2 for instance.

For the life of me I can't figure out what's going on, and I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!

Sounds like my last ISP at work. ;)

Did you make sure the ports forwarded were UDP? If so, try disabling your firewalls and check to see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Yeah, the ports are forwarded for both TCP and UDP. I've tried disabling my software firewall, but that had no effect.

Per your suggestion, I'll see if there's a way for me to disable my router's firewall.

I'll report back shortly.

Great, disabling my router's firewall worked!

Obviously, though, I'd rather not have to disable the firewall in order to play. Do you have any ideas as to what specifically the firewall might be doing that's messing with Halo multiplayer?

Difficult to say without seeing the settings to be honest. :(

Try checking for attack detection/prevention. It might be stupidly thinking that all of the incoming (and in its eyes, probably unsolicited) UDP packets are a DoS attack.

Ah, found it! It was a box entitled "Block WAN Ping" than needed to be unchecked.

Thanks for all your help!

Don't understand what that has to do with Halo but hey, if it works. =)

Your pc needs to be allowed to ping other machines to connect, the lower the ping the better, otherwise you will experience lag or at worse a drop out of the game, this happens alot using XBC,try putting the laptop or whatever gaming machine you are using into the DMZ on the router, this will allow the gaming PC unfethered access to the internet but be careful as it will be unprotected,if you have an old PC use that one to play,,,

Hope that helps

Incorrect. :(

Your ability to respond to ICMP pings has nothing to do with being able to use other services.

The ports you need to forward on your network for Halo: Combat Evolved PC are:

80 (TCP)

2302 (UDP)

2303 (UDP)

You can use the free Port Check Tool provided by PortForward.com to ensure that the ports you want forwarded on your network are indeed forwarded.

OK so I found my Halo PC disc in the CD drive of an old machine and I'm getting tired of WoW so installed it. Played through the first level and it felt great. Like going away from your girlfriend for a month and when you come back you get the hug where you bury your face in her neck and smell the familiar scent of her perfume and shampoo. Oh how I missed thee. So i get on-line and get ready to shake off the rust and embarrass some noobs, when my frame rate dies down to 6-20. So exit out and drop some settings but to no avail. I have a 4200 Dual core 3GB of RAM and a GTS450! I should have no problems running this game. So what am I forgetting having been away for years?

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Hi Iggwilv, welcome back. Try turning off decals. They always kill my performance when playing on Vista/7.

Check your nvidia control panel settings and make sure AA isn't on by default. I know Halo doesn't support AA, but it's worth a look.

Nodey! Good to see your still hanging around. Decals I usually like leaving on to see where my bullets are hitting, I have turned off specular and shadows. I shouldn't have to turn anything thing off because the video is a pretty good one by todays standards and its a 7year old game. I'll give it a whirl.

Franky! I'll give that nviea thing a try because there always a retarded setting in those control panels that cause problems.

Well I went to run the nVidea control panel and it wouldn't run because the driver was messed up. Updated the drivers and viola!
