Note: Though smoking may be considered a drug, I don't think the topic is taboo since it doesn't directly violate the code of conduct as in it is not illegal.
First off, let me say that I smoke. It probably isn't what you'd think, but by definition, I am still a smoker since I take part in the activity of smoking tobacco.
This has been bugging me for a while. Current culture would have you believe that smoking extremely bad to do. However, what they mean is a certain type of smoking. Smoking, or at least how I smoke, is no more harmful than a lot of other products such as wine - done in moderation, smoking isn't as terrible as many people think. And it's frankly quite enjoyable.
I am not like the stereotypical idea of a 'smoker' in that I am not addicted to nicotine. I haven't allowed myself to be. I never find myself craving a cigarette, simply because I understand that smoking should be reserved for special occasions and not made a habit. If you can smoke responsibly, like drinking, it can be quite enjoyable and is useful for social situations. The key is to keep yourself from getting addicted.
Do's:
- Only smoke cigarettes in social situations. Example, if you're offered a smoke, only then take it.
- If you're going to smoke a cigarette, roll your own. Packages of cigarettes are too easy to buy in large numbers and take almost no thought in smoking. It makes it easier to form a habit.
- If you feel like you're craving a cigarette, stop smoking.
- Enjoy it. Don't smoke just to smoke - there is something extremely enjoyable about rolling your own cigarette while resting on a hike, or out on a porch.
- Smoke outside. I mean, c'mon - it does stink.
Don'ts:
- Don't smoke more than once or twice a week.
- Don't smoke while doing other things, such as driving or watching TV. When you're not actually enjoying and thinking about what you're doing, you're just smoking to do something with your hands and mouth - which is what a lot of people do with eating as well.
- Don't smoke store-bought cigarettes. They taste like crap, and aren't always made out of only tobacco. A lot of times companies will put 'filling' in the tobacco.
"Why smoke?" Some people enjoy smoking, rather it be for the taste or feel. I look at smoking like I do wine - it's something enjoyable to do while you sit outside and let your mind wander on topics.
Before I learned to smoke I used to find the smell repulsive. However, if you can learn to smoke suddenly you don't mind the smell any longer. This means you can get with that hot girl who happens to smoke without finding the smell repulsive. :P
Also, it's great for social situations. If you're trying to make a good impression on a person who smokes and they offer you one, you can accept it.
The key to smoking is to avoid getting addicted. THAT is when it becomes really harmful. It's when you light up 10 times a day without even enjoying it that smoking becomes dangerous.
My advice to you: When you're of legal age to smoke, give it a try - however, avoid addiction at all costs. If you feel yourself getting addicted, give it a rest for a few months. With a little self control you can enjoy smoking occasionally without totally destroying your body - because in reality it really is enjoyable.
