You seem to have veered way off course from your original post with this, but I will try to answer as best I can.

It is said that the prisoner best resembles a sea scorpion. It mentions clawed hands, which are opposable and a requirement for using tools. It does not state they are great big crab claws.

On this same vein, the precursor technology seems to be somewhat organic in nature, perhaps even sentient, as it is damaged and destroyed by the firing of the Halo ring. It is conceivable that precursor technology is not built, but rather 'grown'.

Another little snippet I've noticed on my reread.

Is it possible that the forerunners created it before it was sealed up?

It will be interesting to see if more information is given about the Forerunner/Precursor conflict in the next two novels.
