I just think I found a huge hint in the soundtrack...
The second track of "Finale" is called "Thermopylae Soon." For those who don't know, Thermopylae was the pass that King Leonidas (also a track) made last stand with his Spartans to defend it from the invading Persian army. The Spartans inflicted heavy losses, but a man betrayed them and showed the Persians a secret route around the pass, and all the Spartans were killed.
Possibly a hint of what the Master Chief has in store for him?
OMG... could the betrayer possibly be cortana telling the gravemind where Earth is? If so, I can't think of how the few remaining spartans could win the war for humanity...But the Greeks did win in the end. There was also another Persian/Greek battle called Marathon (another Bungie game). One of the Greek's main cities, Athens (Reach), was burned by the persians. A later battle at Salamis was a naval (space) battle, fought off the coast of Greece (Earth) against the Persians. The greeks were outnumbered, but they knew the area better, and punched huge holes in persian ships with battering rams (MAC guns). The Persians, after losing half their navy, fled only to be defeated by the Spartans at the battle of Plataea. There was a thread in New Mombasa that pointed out the similarities between the Halo storyline and Greek history. I think this only backs up that theory.
