It wasn't the story it was the game.
Campaign was made outstanding with large environments to explore great possibilities created by the way the game was constructed (gameplay). So many ways to fight, to get through, to win a battle. It couldn't have been dreamed by one person it was a collection of many people's dreams orchestrated perfectly in sink to make this master piece.
It was also fast pace and movement was fun especially jumping for me. If you have time try sword lunging, makes campaign fun.
Whatever pace, for whatever reasons, Halo 2 could fit to any want in a fun experience if one was willing to play it the way it was meant to be played (fast, with adaptations on the way or one might become frustrated).
Explaining this game would take a lifetime. It came together in ways that I don't even think the creators had in mind but worked like nothing ever had before (it's well done uniqueness carried it to the masses which embraced it like no game in history).
