Subject: A question about the glassing of Reach.

Oh hey there

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

So then if it takes 15 seconds only for glassing but not necessarily burning of land then destroying the entire surface of a planet is much more feasible than previously thought. The Covenant could simply have glassed cities or key areas of the planet, farmland etc, and merely burned the rest of the surface saving time and energy. I find that the most plausible of the scenarios, at least when it comes to descriptions of the destruction of the entire surface of a planet, like in Halsey's description.

I think that condemned was simply exaggerated for the look of the map. In the books it was clearly stated that the covenant avoided glassing the equator to find the forerunner artifact.

I was just using condemned as an example to get to the question that anton eventually answered-ish for me.

Edit: sorry double post

The first pic was taken after it cooled down.

Error 404:
-Error not found.

Perhaps a little bit of both.

Although, simply firing the energy projector in atomosphere will already have similar effects of a 15KM meteor impacting, taking a while for atmosphere to mend itself.

Starting wildfires in various locations would have the same effect as well. Only a few plasma hits would be required, and the smoke and ash would cause climate changes that would make it quite inhospitable. So yeah, large parts of the planet could be set on fire like that, but only areas of resistance would be likely to succumb to glassing.

It just looks like the old idea of glassing is largely moot now, where we once thought of every square inch being reduced to this glass substance with all the atmosphere and oceans boiled away.

Yeah I basically agree. A retcon but one that can and does fit well into already established canon.

read Halo: Evolution, one of the stories in there has lots of 'glassing' stuff in it, describes it basically as giant gouges cut into the landscape and the ground is basically melted into glass by the intense heat, the whole surface is not as far as Im concerned glasses, that would be a needless waste of time and resources. also describes the glassing done in circular patterns, cutting 'symbols' into the planet, probably a symbol to say its an 'unclean' planet or the likes.

First of all read the whole thread before posting because we've pretty much ended the discussion.

Second I've read all the books.
