With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.
Here's a map thats somewhat inspired by the Unreal series (my Gravitron one is also somewhat based on the highly innovative map designs of U, UT, UC, and U2):
Two giant, odd Forerunner castle-like structures (7-10 levels in height (each level will be about 7-9 meters high), and 2/3 of a soccer field in length and width) that float in the atmosphere of a gas giant (to make it as "Halo" as possible), and with Earth-like gravity (due to gravitational "dampers" that lessen the gas giant's immense gravity by generating a field of Earth-like gravity around the map). These structures are spaced a great distance apart (I'd say at least 150 percent (200 percent max) of the length of Sidewinder, (if you unbent that map) would be the distance between the structures), and would have smaller floating mini-bases (only one level high for each of them, and maybe 50 meters square (not necessarily a square base, though)). Connecting all these floating, beautiful structures together is a network of light bridges. The castle-like structures would have greater volume towards the bases of them than towards the top, so there would be more light bridges extending out from the lowest level, and fewer as you go up. Apart from the top levels (which will only have one light bridge going straight across to the other bases' top level, with no "island" in between), most of the light bridges will not go straight across (some will go at an angle to the other base, or actually go away from the other base, connect to an "island," then another bridge would connect that to the other base), and also, most will have an island or islands in between them. Furthermore, due to gas giant "fog," sniping will be limited (if it wasn't limited, a sniper would be too much of a god in this map.... even though we'd like to be gods). From one base, you will not be able to see even halfway to the other base, an you will not be able to see the bottom level light bridges from the top level. There will be no rails on the light bridges, so you will be able to fall to your death.... you will inevitably be crushed by the gas giant's tremendous air pressure at lower altitudes. Vehicles will be available at the bottom levels (where the light bridges will be bigger in width) only. And last but not least, there will be ramps and to serve as a means to get from the bottom level of a base to the top, as well as elevators that will allow for creative play by frusterating the hell out of whoever wants to use it (when they get closer, hit the button and make it go up).
About the vehicles: Ghosts and Banshees (and possibly the ATV and Shadow) will be the best, most likely, since they are small, fast, and very manuverable. But since they have these advantages, an advantage will be added to the other vehicles (but not the Wraith, if driveable, since its mortar will work damn well anyway). Ballistic weapons fire will reflect off the light bridges with angles of reflection equal to the angles of incidence (and plasma weapons fire will simply hit and disappate). This allows for creative kills, like shooting a light bridge above you to possibly hit a person on another light bridge that is above you, but below the one your shell/bullets will hit. You may even get lucky enough to have multiple ricochets, which would look cool if you're using a sniper rifle or tank (since the bullet/shell trails will be visible).
What do you think?
