Subject: Exodus Transcript

This is part of the Transcript taken a little bit past the start of the mission "Exodus" on Halo Reach

Stacker (COM): "Kilo 26, this is Kilo 40. Covenant corvette is raining hell on us! Final Protective Fire-1, danger close, on my command, over!"

Kilo 26 (COM): "Copy, Kilo 40. FPF-1 at your command."
Stacker (COM): "Fire FPF-1, over."
Kilo 26 (COM): "Firing FPF-1... Shot."
Stacker (COM): "Hold on to your helmets!"

The ground shakes violently.

Kilo 26 (COM): "Kilo 40: request FPF sit-rep."
Stacker (COM): "Negative, 26! Corvette's still coming!"
Kilo 26 (COM): "Copy, 40. Firing FPF-2... Shot."

The ground shakes violently again.

Stacker (COM): "Damn! How do you stop that thing?"

Can anyone explain to me what is shooting? Must be pretty -blam!- big to make the ground shake that much

I was going to post this on the Reach forum but thought i would get a better response here.

Okay, but what is it that shoots it? seems like a big mother -blam!- to me

Probably a ship/station based MAC or mass driver.

Doubtful. They wouldn't fire a MAC down at something over the city. Well, maybe a frigate-based one but later in the mission they say the nearest frigate is unavailable/cannot push through to the landing port

Anyway, I don't think it's the ground shaking, just the building. Could be a ground-based mass driver cannon like from PoA.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

It was probably a canon from the frigate Starboard Dawn, which was near the city during the battle.

Several marines are talking about requesting airstrike assets from it during the falcon ride in Exodus.

How could one mass driver shot gut a CCS class at the end but 2 (supposedly more powerful) frigate mac rounds fail to kill a corvette? Plus FPF 2 comes too soon after the first shot to be a standard frigate mac, accounting for charging time.

Then again, how did that small missile battery at the end of the level blow out the bow of the corvette too?

Perhaps the ships shields were up for the first two FPF shots which are infact ground based macs/mass drivers and by the time the missile battery comes into play the shields are down in order for the corvette to directly bombard the city, believing ground forces have secured anything which could be a direct threat to the unshielded hull of the corvette which was actually the case until six turned up.

All this would point to the covenant ships being really quite fragile with rather thin hulls and relying almost entirely on shielding technology for protection, whereas the UNSC relies on meters of ablative titanium armour instead, which is a known fact.

Ahh it all makes sense if you think it through.

TBH, the mass driver round didn't gut the CSS class battlecruiser. It simply hit the energy projector/gravity lift zone and hit that area hard. I doubt it went entirely through, but probably cause some damage/power feedback which is why the ship crashed.

Well, we do know Covenant ships have to drop their shields to fire, and the Corvette at the end of Exodus was doing a steady stream of fire. That's most likely why the missile battery managed to damage and force it to move away.

Did the CCS crash? I just watched the cutscene on youtube and it looked like the mass driver round just royally gutted the whole plasma projector/grav lift area, so your probably right about that. Didnt look like it would crash though.

If memory serves, you can briefly see the CSS smack into the ground as the PoA starts lifting off.

Oh wow, youre absolutely correct! I just watched it on youtube again and you can clearly see the CCS hitting the deck. I never noticed that before. Pretty subtle considering that 3 kilometers of starship just hit the floor, but bungie probably wanted to keep the focus on the autumn in that cutscene. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Nah, it just took a flame bath in the dirt.

Pass.

The only thing that would make the ground shake like that would be a MAC really. That however brings up some problems.

Corvettes have no shielding. At no point are they shown to. We know Covenant ships have to drop a section of their shield but not the whole thing.
On Sword Base a corvette is shot straight out of the sky by what appears to be a frigates MAC on low power, given the velocity and lack of "BOOM".
This disproves the idea it is a MAC.

Other than that it could be "conventional" artillery and the shaking is the result of shells that have missed their target?

Or the sword base one was a destroyer or other ship based MAC. Doesn't have to be a frigate.

I would agree with this, but why would one of those be in the middle of city? There were about three Orbital Elevators on New Alexandria´s horizon.

During the Falcon ride to the beach, Sgt Duval is on the radio requesting airstrikes from the nearby frigate Starboard Dawn. Perhaps it was this frigate that fired the FPF cannon.

Maybe they set those up for defensive purposes?

The city was under siege for three days. I doubt the Covenant would have allowed the UNSC to set up such defenses during that time.

Depends on the location. If they were more towards where Six entered the city, Covenant presence was weaker there. Covenant were mostly in the center of the city.

But there was Corvette pretty much right over the Traxus Tower. When you´re trying to activate the Missle Batteries, you can see one right over your head, in the city where you came from.

  • 04.03.2011 1:57 PM PDT

wouldn't have been a MAC, they are too powerful to be shooting at targets that close to the ground, cause if you miss you have something like a 50 kiloton explosion on your hands. could it not have been Archer missile strike or something similar? also a MAC would wreck that Corvette, and firing a MAC at that sort of distance (not very far, even from orbit) the chances of hitting would be unbelievably high. 35,000 metres/second, say the Frigate or Destroyer was couple hundred kilometres in orbit, the time on target is at most six seconds. so would vote something other than MAC.

But the Frigate would have had to been close by, we should have been able to see it. Plus, it fires two rounds, I´m pretty sure that´s overkill for a Corvette.
