I think it is safer to say that he loves her as much as a Spartan can really love someone.
Couldn't say it better myself.

John was personally taken by halsey aged six and raised and trained with the rest of spartan 2 class 1. They all see her as somewhat of a mother figure. Its probable John does not even remember his real mother.

Oh, thank you for clarifying. I was about to Facepalm because of how much stupidity would have been in the literal version of that statement.

Though I will bring up this fact. A person is defined and grows according to their experiences. Therefore, even a clone won't be the same exact person as their original because they have lived a different life.
Same applies to Cortana.

Yes. Cortana is not a copy of halsey, but she does have halseys neural imprint including the shadows of her memories and life experiences. But she is her own person in her own right in the end.

I always found the charisma between the chief and cortana to be strange considering they had only known each other for a few months by the end of halo 3. I always thought it could be more because everyone loved and respected cortana due to her being the most advanced human AI ever created and basically holding the key to humanities survival. John being tasked with the protection of such an asset is perhaps why he seems so attatched..........purely platonic, and just doing his job as saviour of mankind.

Actually, I hadn't thought about that. Though a bit of your information is incorrect. Master Chief knew Cortana before Halo, if the books hold canon, although she does seem surprised when Chief first implants her into his helmet (she is surprised by the similarities between Chief's armor mechanics and the Pillar of Autumn's).
So who know, I really can't say for sure. The biggest thing that made it seem like they were in love is the whole exchange between them after Chief saves her on the Flood infested High Charity. Unrelated: I love that cinematic.

I thought cortana knew about john for a good while beforehand (after all, she did pick him herself after careful deliberation) but they wernt actually introduced until just before reach fell, when John got his neural implant necessary to join with cortana in the suit and go in for operation red flag, which was all only about a month before the events of alpha halo?

Its been years since i read TFOR.

It's surprising that it's been years since The Fall Of Reach came out.

But you're right. I wonder though, we know for sure that Cortana personally picked both Noble 6 and Master Chief and knew them each before hand. Do you think that she already knew that they were the two most unique Spartans ever made, because she witnessed the birth and growth of each, even though only from a hands-off perspective for Noble 6.
I wonder if she really had that much foresight to see what kind of an impact they would have on the war. She does say, "I do know how to pick them".

Well, I think it's more implied than prominent.

The problem is, I haven't heard any counter-arguments against the thought, so I can only assume that my conclusion was correct, at least the vast majority seems to think so.

Ahh, i just answered my own conundrum!

Ive stated that cortana has halseys memories and personality imprint. In this way, cortana has knowledge and acquaintance of John from far before she was even created, and in a way John of her too, because halsey had been his mother figure from age six. Halsey stated she had known John was special from very early on too, a natural leader, so she had special relationship with him compared to the rest of class 1. This feeling would have carried over to cortana too.

This finally explains why john and cortana seem to go waaaaaaaay farther back on screen that the timeframe of their actual acquaintance would suggest!

It's more like a brother/sister relationship. Like Chief and the rest of the Spartan-IIs

No, I don't think so. Chief trusts no one like Cortana.

Oh he does. One of his character flaws is he tends to put to much trust into his friends, so much so he forgets how to live and fight alone. In the book The Flood, for example, he's nearly killed because he doesn't have his squad to back him up, which he's wired himself to expect.

But you are right in a sense: Cortana and Dr. Halsey are essentially the same person, so it can be said that John's natural respect for Halsey (which comes from her being a mother figure to him and the other Spartans) augments his relationship with Cortana. Add onto the fact the two literally share a brain in that suit, and that's a connection made like no other.

He does remember her, he has a dream in The Flood with her in it. I've noticed he tends to getted a little weirded out whenever he comes in close contact or remembers something from his earlier years before he was a Spartan trainee. Like Parisa, or Epsilon Eridanii during the mission to capture Watts.

He does remember what he was, but its a fading image.

On a less serious note, more related to the topic, we can hear the Chief say in firefight "that voice in my head....sounds hot." XD

People on Bungie.net need to take the books lightly. Especially stating them as canon. Bungie changed a few things with their Halo game that contradict quite a bit of content contained in the books.
However, Bungie is the end all be all of Halo authority, and when they move on, 343 Industries will be. If Bungie or 343 issues a statement or makes a game contrary to some content in a book, that part of the book goes right out the window. The books do hold true as canon but the games supersede them in every way.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Nope. They work together professionally and have a massive amount of respect for one another and even a great friendship. I don't think either of them are actually capable of love though.

  • 04.05.2011 6:58 PM PDT

It's more that Cortana is like Chief's mother because she is basically Dr. Halsey, and Dr. Halsey raised Chief and the other SPARTAN-IIs.
