I think it is safer to say that he loves her as much as a Spartan can really love someone.

I don't think a Spartan can fall in love.

Maria-062 Retired from the UNSC to form a family, so I think they can fall in love.

Yes. The reason the Spartans have no libido is because they have been progressed through puberty early. The idea that a Spartans would never go through the stages of young adulthood is a fairly uneducated one, it would in all likelihood occur much later than a normal human being.
However, we are basing this idea on what has been written in the books so, if they hold true, then Master Chief is actually about 40 years old but much, much younger as a result of the augmentation process and slipspace travel.

@ the last 2 comments, I again refer you to this.
I love that cutscene.

Agreed.

I was almost brought to tears. Easily one of the best cutscenes in a game ever.

Another thought:

I was also thinking that maybe Cortana knows what Chief will become from a purely computer style of thinking. She is an A.I. and unlike humans, she can draw all of her information directly from her memory. So I was just wondering, do you think that maybe she acts the way she does towards Chief because she has realistic deductions of what is going to happen in the future?

[EDIT]: Damn it! I meant to just add it to my last post, sorry.

Of course they're canon, they're just loose canon. Origin of canon (the Halo games) always trumps external contribution (the Halo books). In response to an interview question about how the game contradicts some of the books, Brian Jarrard said, "Well of course anything Bungie makes is canon".

OMG
master chief loves cortana because cortana has been in his head since practicly day one of the covanant war.MC has been with her so long she has corrupted his mind.Thats why he see's her in halo 3.He feels he needs her.In the book he descibes it when cortana is in his head as a fimilar and generally nice mecury feeling. This is why he fought for her and saved her from GRAVEMIND (FTW!!!) and that is why he will always be with her.He has grown to like, and then love her.Same as cortana. She has grown to lack her intellect she once had.for two reasons.! She has had to copy, download and then anaylize the data of halo and the fact that she has improved the slipspace drive and plasma Wepeons oh and upraged mc sheilds while ploting a course back to earth.46% of her mind life is dead because of this and all through this she keeps growing use to being in mc's mind. She and he have grown up together.by this I mean cortana is " yrs old-mc 17 all of this in the boook The first strike!

They love each other and i love halo!

My eyes, they burn!

And you're wrong, "Smart" A.I.'s have a life Span of 7 years before they go into rampancy, if Cortana was with John from "day one" of the Human-Covenant war, she would have gone insane on 2532 seeing how the war started in 2525.

Besides, she did not upgrade John's shields and as for the whole Gravemind rescue, she sent John a message saying there was a way to stop the Flood, of course he was not going to let the opportunity slip past.

TL;DR

Know your Halo before you go around saying things like that boy.

Cortana is unique. She would not go rampant, this is evident in the way Master Chief brings her back to reality after being under the influence of the Gravemind. An average smart A.I. would not be able to be brought back.

In a way, it almost moves her to the level of Contender-Class A.I. Especially considering the fact that she was able to stay more sane and logical than Guilty Spark who is, for all intents and purposes, supposed to be a much more advanced A.I.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

in the Halo Legends short film Origins, in which four years after the events of Halo 3, it is strongly suggested that Cortana is falling into rampancy. She displays several characteristics to support this, such as her hologram flickering, trying to communicate with John-117 despite him being in cryo-sleep, recounting the history of the galaxy, which gets continuously more inaccurate to the point where events being recalled simply did not happen. She even tried to make physical contact with John via her avatar.

Legends is canon btw, just saying it in case you bring the Legends =/= canon thing

Well legends also has regular people wielding tree trunks like they were twigs and using 'air blasts' to attack monsters. All in anime, by the way. So you can say it's canon all you want. But legends doesn't even make sense on a realist level.

Odd one out is the only one that is not canon out of the 7 stories.

No I'm not picking and choosing, it was confirmed. Odd One Out is meant to be a satirical interpretation of the Halo Universe.

So it's not unlike the rest of Halo: Legends. Well, we'll see in Halo 4.

We're not picking and choosing, that's how it is. 343i decided that, not us. Although it is obvious that Odd One Out is non-canon. And the combat animations in anime are [almost] always unrealistic.

Mid7night: Where in the gradient of Halo "cannon" will this fall? In the realm of the current-released books, or more like "published fan-fiction" ?

Frankie: It's canon, like books. Except for Toei. But there IS interpretation - armor styling etc. It's art, after al.

Toei were the ones that made Odd One Out, the rest of Legends was made by other five production houses, so it is canon.

Again, Halo 4 will tell.

I pose this question for you. Do you really think they're gonna kill Cortana? I'll tell you what, if they do, it will be a sure fire sign that the creation of 343 Industries was a bad idea and the Halo Universe will go the way of Star Trek and Star Wars before it.

Cortana likes MC because of his actions and Nobility. When I see MC going after Cortana to retrieve her from Grave Mind and the Covenant I what he would do for another spartan.

No one gets left behind.

The Navy takes care of it's own.

I get that, but there is obviously a different relationship between the two of them than between Master Chief and the next Spartan.

Nobody said anything about killing her, Rampancy is just a state of madness which can be overcame and turned into Metastability just like Mendicant Bias did.

As I said on the first page, I don't put it past 343i to put Cortana in some kind of artificial body. I really don't. Now if it turns out that they are going to put her in an artificial body, I'll be speechless.

Again, Cortana is a very unique character, we also have to bring into account that she knows more than any A.I. ever has. The process of becoming rampant occurs when the A.I. realizes the extent of their existence and it drives them insane to know that they are essentially data miners that have no real purpose beyond that.
However, Cortana has obtained all of the combined knowledge of the Humanity (Through ONI), the Covenant (Through High Charity), the Gravemind (Through Possession), and even the Forerunners (through Installation 04,04B,05, and The Ark). While at one point this may have been a problem for Cortana's sanity, she has something the other A.I. don't; Master Chief.
Master Chief was her check when she first started to get "hyper" on Installation 04 and again when he saved her from the Gravemind. Master Chief is the voice of reason when Cortana begins to become restless. You see this in game when Cortana become weary of enemies and Mater Chief stays calm.

I think that is why Cortana was able to go through all she did. Because the Chief was always there to keep his promises.
