Here's what I think:
Cortana and Master Chief share a relationship that's hard to describe. I agree with some previous posts about how MC and Cortana love each other as brother/sister. But I think this 'love' stems from the need to trust one another; if Cortana makes a wrong calculation, the Chief is screwed, for example. Cortana loves and trusts Master Chief because he is lucky and trustworthy, as he proves time and time again in books and games. That's pretty much why Cortana chose him in the first place (correct me if I'm wrong.) And since he knows that he can trust Cortana, the Chief must protect her. I believe one of the books stated that he feels lonely (or that silence in his head didn't feel right), therefore he needs her.
Also, Master Chief could possibly be the thing that is keeping Cortana out of rampancy. Think about it; all of that Halo and Forerunner data in her memory must've reduced her potential lifespan drastically. Cortana is sane when she's with John. Only my thoughts, that's all.
Great question, btw :p
I really like this man. You have clearly put a lot of thought into it as I did.
For the most part, I think your post could be entirely true. It would seem that Master Chief and Cortana do truly have an indescribable relationship (as has been clearly proven by this thread :] ).
The one thing that I dont agree with though is the observation that if Cortana makes a wrong turn that Master Chief is screwed.
To me, it's like this. Mater Chief and Cortana are both forces to be reckoned with but they both lack something; each other. I beleive they compliment each other in a very deep way and that is why they were able accomplish the amazing feats that they did. Cortana provides the data and the logic, Master Chief provides the Strength and the courage.
I hope you catche my drift. By the way, thanks for the well thought out contribution, and again thanks for not derailing the thread with the classic "is it canon" argument. I appreciate the input.
