Halo 1 & 2 for PC

Whenever I try to connect to a server through the Gamespy thing built into Halo, the connection fails, and what's more, my internet connection dies so that I have to reboot my modem. As far as I can work out it's a problem with Gamespy, because joining by direct IP works just fine.

Is there any other way of finding Halo servers aside from via Gamespy? I'm running Mac Halo 1.5.2 on OS X 10.3.9, if that's relevant.

"Bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

I have a problem like that witth Battlefield 2 for Xbox. Sometimes I can't sign in at all on the game. It only happens with that game. Stupid EA servers...

Sorry Reiginko but I've only played PC about five times and I was at a Netspace, so no problems. But I hope there are other servers than Gamespy, because Gamespy is really annoying. Hope all goes well,

Ok...that's possibly the weirdest thing I've ever heard. By the way it's great to see you again, though I admit it's weird seeing you without the cool text :( Hmm....when you say "modem" are you running on a digital cable modem? Or is it a DSL modem? Who is your ISP? .....

Okay I have an idea. Go into your computer security settings (I'm not exactly sure what this is for you, since I'm running Windows) and check your firewall settings. Scroll down the list of "allowed" programs and make sure Halo and/or Gamespy is on that list and checked off. Otherwise your firewall might be blocking you from using the Gamespy service. Although I don't see why your entire internet connection would fail. Also, I'd scan your computer for any viruses, they may be screwing around with your Internet. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

P.S you should also get X-fire , the ideal program for gamers that allows you to chat with people while playing and find other people who play Halo and other games, there's plenty of people on this forum who have it, it's a handy-dandy tool if you want to find someone to play a quick game with. OR, as always, check out the Unofficial Bungie.net Maw server, you can find the IP in the sticky thread on top.

It's a DSL modem, my ISP is Westnet (I'm in Australia).

I'll try messing around with the firewall settings and see if something works. Would making sure port 2302 is open help?

Unfortunately there's no version of X-fire for Mac at this time. Which sucks. But I'll certainly check into the b.net server. :)

Thanks for you help.

Yes, if that's the port you use to access your games. I forget the menu name and the function of it, and I can't check cause Halo is on my other hard drive, but go into the Halo settings and try changing the port numbers for the 2 ports. For example, try putting 2305 and 2304 as the port #s. And then you can manually set your firewall to allow these ports to open. I'd suggest trying this, it usually works.

It's too bad X-fire isin't for Mac, I thought there might be a version for it; anyways I hope that should fix it.

I went into my network preferences (Sharing if someone who knows what they're doing is reading this), and created a new "Allow" thing in the Firewall pane, making sure port 2303 stays open (that's the client port in Halo). And it worked. I was really happy, because I managed to connect to a server through gamespy.

And then, it didn't work. The next time I tried to connect through gamespy (the server I was on before was playing Sidewinder CTF, which I hate playing unless I'm on a team of mates and we're all in the same room eating chips and stuff), my internet died and the same thing happened again.

To tell the truth, I'm not even sure what actually happens. To reconnect to the internet, I just need to go into my modem setup thing, and commit all the settings that are already in there, without actually having to reboot the modem like the manual says to. I'm using a NetComm NB3 modem, if that sheds some light on the situation at all.

Don't drink to excess– You might shoot at tax-collectors... and miss

I play Halo on my Mac, same OS version as you. Check to make sure there is not a newer update on the MacSoft site. I don't have Halo on this computer, (at work), so I can't check.

Don't bother to scan for viruses, there are not any.

Start up on your install disc by restarting while holding down the "c" key, open Disk Utility and rebuild permissions and repair disc. Restart and try again.

Most problems I get on my Mac that are not caused by bad permissions are caused by loading bad fonts, (I'm a graphic artist and need lots of fonts). I find periodically dumping them makes everything better. Just keep the basic system fonts loaded.

If that fails, dump Halo and re-install. Then update to the newest version with the updater from the MacSoft site, if your disc does not have the newest version on it.

If that fails, you might have to refresh or re-install your system, but if you are not having problems with your computer in general, it's not likely.
