Subject: What branch were the Spartan III's part of?

Were they all Army or is that just Noble Team?

And while on the subject of Spartans who were the Spartan I's? I heard of something called Orion, can someone explain to me what that was entirely?

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

SIIIs were all Army

The Orion Project was the Spartan I project, there were pretty much ODST with injections that made them stronger.
Johnson is one of them and mendez is speculated to be one also.

I'm not 100% sure but I think all the S-III's were Navy since they had Navy ranks but they fell under the jurisdiction of the Army since Ackerson was an Army officer and he was the head of the S-III program.

Project Orion was the UNSC's first attempt to create super soldiers. Some say they weren't actually called spartans but theres a few places where they are called S-I's. Also Johnson one.

edit: damn took too long to type and grey beat me to it.

Thanks anyway!

But wait, you have Army ranks while you play Reach (Private, Sergeant, General etc.)

Same for Halo 3, and Chief was certainly Navy.

Q: Hey, what did Hitler say to the black jew?
A: Get to the back of the oven.

They are Navy. However, being Special Warfare teams, they (as you should know, assuming you are a real US Army Ranger) fall under the jurisdiction of SOCOM and are assigned tasks that qualify as special operations and SOCOM officers, regardless of branch, are placed in command if the mission tasks are within their field of expertise.

The Army/Marine ranks in matchmaking aren't canon. Not to my knowledge anyway. They're just easier to understand and relate to. You think 8 year-olds would understand, "First Chief Petty Officer," or "Ensign"?

  • 04.04.2011 5:14 PM PDT

All Spartans Are NAVY! Even Noble Team!

The ranks of Commander (Carter) and Leutenant Commander (Kat) DO NOT EXIST IN THE ARMY. Both Spartan programs were produced by The Naval Special Weapons (NavSpecWeap) branch of ONI (Office of NAVAL Intelligence).

I realize that Col Ackerson was in the Army, but that doesn't mean that all of his subordinates are Army as well.

This is true, and I don't know why Bungie did this, however, you should know that these are also all Marine ranks as well. The Army and Marines have the exact same rank structure. And as the Marines are a branch of the Navy, it makes a bit of sense.

No they don't.

No we're not.

But the ranks after Warrant Officer are completly random, going from Captain-Major-Lt Colonel-Commander-Colonel-Brig General(As a seperate rank)-General. It seems like they simplified the rank structure, at least for Multiplayer.

they were army, and not augmented and indoctrinated from a young age, which explains why Master Chief outperforms all of them

The reason that the Spartan IIs outperform the Spartan IIIs is that the Spartan IIs were selected by more rigorous genetic requirements, were given more augmentations and were given MJOLNIR armor.

The Spartan IIIs were meant to be cheaper. They were selected from a broader gene pool, were given fewer augmentations (improved survival during the process) and were only issues SPI armor (with several exceptions). That is why the SIIs were better, not what branch they reported to.

You are correct in your assertions, except for two points.

One, they were trained (indoctrinated) from a young age and two, they were augmented, just with different augmentations than the Spartan IIs.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Spartan-IIIs were all under direct command of the UNSC Army.
Spartan-IIs were under direct command of ONI and the UNSC Navy.

Both are under command for ONI.
S-II's are in NavSpecWeap.
S-III's are under the power of the admirality that controls the UNSC. Ackerson started the project and had them liased to the Army loosely.

Army. Some high ranking army officers in the Halo universe wanted to compete with Dr. Halsey's Spartan II program.

Spartan III's are Army. Noble team was recruited from the best of the Spartan III's (or probably just those who survived their initial suicide mission). After recruitment, they were transferred from their initial branch (the Army) to the Navy (hence their naval ranks).

and yes apart from the 5 star general, the enlisted and officer ranks are the same.

Sorry, but they are different. While they do contain similarities, they are not the same (at least the enlisted ranks are not).

Marines:
E-1 Private
E-2 Private First Class
E-3 Lance Corporal (exclusive to the Marines, Private First class is the Army Equivalent)
E-4 Corporal
E-5 Sergeant
E-6 Staff Sergeant
E-7 Gunnery Sergeant (exclusive to Marines, Sergeant First Class is the Army equivalent)
E-8 First Sergeant/Master Sergent
E-9 Sergent Major/Master Gunnery Sergeant (exclusive to Marines)/SgMaj of the Marine Corps

ok, yes, but the officer ranks are exactly the same.

Racism isn't wrong if it's funny.

Specialty, I believe. They probably supersede the idea of Military Branches.

P.S. How do we know that Noble Team is part of the Army? I must have missed something.

We have known this since Bungie released the NOBLE team bios.

I'm pretty sure the Spartan-IIIs were Navy, and Noble Team was just on loan to the Army. Ackerson, while technically part of the Army, was their lesion in ONI, who greenlit his project.
