I'm not going to say it was the greatest, or most innovative, or even interesting game of all time.
But there was something in its very approachable gameplay that made it stand out. For all its glitches and flaws it still had enough charm to keep me coming back right until the end.
It had what Bungie used to preach about; that '30 seconds of fun' principle, for example, where you'd suddenly dominate the other players and get a killtac, or the mad dash for the hill et al
Those 30 seconds got thrown out of the window with Halo 3 and now Reach; AR charging ended confrontations before you could get a nice streak going and Armour lock replaced 30 seconds of fun with 30 seconds of sitting still, being invincible.
I made some friends on Halo 2 that I'm still very much in touch with now, and although the memories do hide its flaws somewhat, the game itself is very much solid.
It was just...fun to play. That's what it boils down to.
