If Reach hadn't completely pissed all over long established canon, maybe it would've had a chance.
I disagree, maybe if Staten had wrote it and the story was much better then it became, "ruining" canon wouldn't have been a problem. But the story suffers from the lack of *insert anything here* that it just kinda tanked.
ODST does have the better campaign, because it was different and unique to everything that came before it. I'm still torn to say whether or not the story was any better, but certainly the campaign was enjoyable because it was different enough.
It broke canon, but it also had a half-assed story with crappy character development. I like the ODST squad. Throughout the campaign I really began to like them. With Reach...no character development. Didn't really care about them. Not to mention the whole campaign was: go here, shoot this, blow up that. Nothing seemed important at all. The whole huge global battle feeling was not there at all. And...what Covenant fleet? I bet somebody completely new to Halo wouldn't have known a HUGE Covenant fleet was invading. It was so poorly done. Ruined the canon. And was just overall the biggest disappointment. Which, make me think Reach is an abomination of a game and that Bungie focused more on multiplayer and other features instead of the campaign.
I think one of the reasons the ODST characters are more successful here is simple because their personalities were much more enjoyable then the super-serious Spartans. They joked, they complained, and really acted like a group of friends. Nothing like the Spartans who, in my opinion, should've felt just as much as a family.
And objective wise, the ODST wasn't much different when it came to gameplay, you're still just shooting/defending, and occasionally pressing a button. No real difference there, even story-wise. ODST and Reach share one thing in common when it comes to story though, everything prior to the last two levels don't mean a damn thing.
And yes, the Reach campaign was a disappointment, there was hardly anything "epic" about it. Which really blew a hole through most of us who have been a longtime fan of the franchise.

Well, one of the things that would've made the story much better would be not completely rewriting Halo history. Don't get me wrong, I understand over time some things get rewritten or ignored after a franchise expands (like the change of Johnson's immunity from the Flood), but there are just so many things the Reach campaign completely changes that it becomes impossible to be able to enjoy as part of the Halo lore, lame story or not.
Honestly, none of us really know how people would look at the canon changes if the story was much more enjoyable, if everything was better and they didn't jump around with other story elements. I'm a hardcore fan of the fiction as well, but if Bungie want's to change it, by all means, I could care less. The books were a fun read, but if it means changing canon for a better story for the games, I'm up for it. Since the games are the main core of the franchise, anyways. But they didn't. The story stunk, and while I still don't give a damn that they changed canon, I am disappointed with what we got instead.

It's funny, you say they focused primarily on multiplayer and even that didn't come out good.. heh.
Aside from enjoying it, I'm not touching that subject. =P
