been bugging the hell out of me for ages, I for one believe it to be a UNSC carrier but that is just my personal thought on it. anyone else got any ideas what the hell this is? note it is not a Halcyon or a Marathon, without a doubt not due to totally different shape.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

well you have to consider the fact it might not be a war ship. but it could be a destroyer, or crusier

Probably an unfinished Halcyon that has been called to action in desperation.

I honestly always thought it was just artistic license and that it was meant to be a generic Cruiser. I dont think it was meant to be anything specific, just something generaly PoA-ish.

there are two of them in the picture, in the video it simply refers to them as 'Sol Defence Group 3\A-5' so would imagine they are warships or else they won't be doing much defending. would be great to put a class to them, so I could think 'that is what a UNSC carrier looks like...!' for example, rather than just thinking of them as generic ships, which they could very well be.

also going vote against them being incomplete Halcyon due to the rear section more than anything not at all matching the aft section of a Halcyon, was also curious what the devil that structure on the dorsal surface is, around half way down like some sort of giant rigging...?

also in the next sequence of the 'arms race' video you see a closer view of the front section passing something on the ground, the ship obviously well in the background, can make out many many faintly luminous areas, perhaps windows or bays. either way get the impression they are enormous ships, would say much bigger than destroyers and frigates.

another thought I just had about the 'window' like parts, looks like it could infact be sunlight passing through some sort of 'gaps'.

Edit: also get the impression that their very very hazy, obscured appearance is hinting to them being rather distant, further indicating they are very large ships.

its moving under its own power I would say, moving from right to left, there is another identical ship just below/left in the backdrop, quite hard to see though. looks like a long capital ship with one rather large engine (or perhaps two mounted horizontal?) some sort of large rigging on top, not sure what that could be, there is also weird structure on the bottom portion of the ship as well, again clueless what that would be.

with regards to ships bigger than Frigates unable to basically enter atmosphere, look at UNSC Spirit of Fire, seems to have no trouble doing such when it arrives at the shield world, which must have an atmosphere due to the fact it has liquid water. also at the end of Halo: Reach, that rather large looking ship in the backdrop, landed. maybe ship larger ships can enter and exit atmosphere? also Pillar of Autumn in Halo: Reach, was landed so it had to land somehow, though I am not fond of the idea of what will be many millions of tons of ship landing with no visible assistance.

Edit: also the unknown ships look like they are coming in for re-supply and the status display that IDs them as Sol Defence Group says number of ships '02/08' suggesting they are the last two ships of the group, further suggesting they aren't new ships but rather ships of the line 'landing' for some unknown reason.

The larger ships can land. Moving around like a frigate does? No.

The ship at the end of Halo Reach is a colony ship, same as the spirit of fire. The inside of the shield world would be a weird situation anyway. Colony ships are built to be able to land, as they tend to form the basis of the first major city of a new colony.

Isn't the Misriah Armory on Mars? Im not sure if i remembered correctly or not. But if it is the those ships could be moving in atmosphere under their own power because Mars is smaller then earth so theres less of a gravitational force

It looks like this is possibly an under construction UNSC ship of some kind. Would make sense, seeing as Misriah Armory seems to provide most of the UNSC's assets.

The only thing it can't be is a Frigate, because Sinoviet builds those (as evidenced by the huge hologram of a Frigate in the Sinoviet center)

An unfinished Halcyon?

  • 04.07.2011 8:18 PM PDT

the ships are under their own power, coming in for resupply, they are not under construction, incomplete or Frigates. they are part of an active defence group, have obviously seen action due to the fact they are the last of their group, very large and possibly landing on the surface of Mars, at the armoury.

also no chance it is a Halcyon or Marathon, finished, unfinished or otherwise damaged. both Halcyon and Marathons have two clear engines, where as this mystery class only has what appears to be one. also the front is all wrong for both classes as well, especially the Marathon. looks similar to the front of a Halcyon but the front is far too short and slightly different in structure.

maybe a hint of their class is what they are being resupplied with, Pelicans, Marines, Small Arms like sniper rifles, pistols, Warthogs, more than fits in with a class similar to an Amphibious Assault Carrier used by modern forces for Marine attacks, maybe it is an Assault Carrier intended for deploying large amounts of troops, hence why the thing can land as well.

Look like a marathon class ship, with a bit of artistic lisence added.

its obviously a semi-completed pillar of autumn

Here's my $0.02.

I say it is a Cruiser, Marathon or unknown class. Was under-construction along with 7 others but when Sol was attacked they were launched incomplete with skeleton crews. With only 2 surviving after the events of Halo 2, but before 3 they are landing on Mars for repair and resupply/recrew before heading back out to engage the second fleet. Probably destroyed shortly after.

Marathon? Halcyon?

could indeed be some un-named class of cruiser, man it sucks not knowing what they are 'officially' meant to be.

  • 04.08.2011 3:11 PM PDT

Looks like a partially incomplete/destroyed Marathon cruiser. It's got the same indentations near the back.

  • 04.08.2011 3:17 PM PDT

also don't think its artistic licence either, since everything else in that video was the way it is supposed to be, the pistols, the sniper rifles, the warthogs, the pelicans, everything. which too me suggests that the ship is something other than just a Marathon/Halcyon with artistic licence, didn't do a very good job since it looks nothing like either of them, compare it to the pictures of the Halcyon and then the Marathon, the shape is all wrong, especially the front end.

I have reasonable belief that ship is UNSC carrier. Maybe it's last kind of that class assigned to defend something.

  • 04.08.2011 4:10 PM PDT

what would you be basing your conclusion on? since I also thought at first it was a Carrier.
