Bad plot writing. It was just an excuse to stick another environment in the game.

Reach for Halo!

Bad plot writing. It was just an excuse to stick another environment in the game.

I beg to differ. The only reason people dont like this game is
A. They have never played it, and only heard others say they hated it

or

B. They played it, but were looking for a good multiplayer like all halo games have, which it did not

Halo Wars had a great story and killer cutscenes (best in any halo game). So I have to say nay to your little acusation. The reason they went to Acarcadia was to, as stated before, follow the forerunner artifact. But mid mission, anders gets kidnapped and then they have to leave and follow the tracker to the shield world. So they did not finish the mission. You are right.

So where is the question you needed answered in the first place?

Wars had a better plot than Reach.

And Wars actually fit in with pre-existing canon. Reach breaks pre-existing canon.

Exactly, bad writing. It is never properly explained why Arcadia was important, because it wasn't. It was a bad plot device to add more length to a story that didn't need it. That level could easily have been set on Harvest, giving the game a sequence of levels Harvest-Shield World instead of Harvest-Unimportant and undeveloped Forerunner installation-Shield World. It was a link that was not needed.

Agreed about the cutscenes.

There was no point to Arcadia. The Covenant were already on the shield world prior to Arcadia.

The Harvest artifact led a detachment of Covie forces to Arcadia for something that was never revealed to either side. UNSC forces followed the same information. Get side tracked by Anders' kidnapping. Land on Shield World. Destroy it. The end. It was very in the moment, and very unnecessary from a solid gameplay/story perspective.

As someone earlier said, Halo Wars had a poorly developed plot with a plot device that didn't really matter til the absolute end. Major plot hole revolving the use of what the Covenant can and can't do either, and no I'm not talking remotely about canon issues so don't confuse what I'm saying with 'it doesn't fit canon' because that isn't what I'm saying here.

Nonetheless I liked playing it.

Compared to the random crap you had to do in the Halos that made no sense, Halo Wars at least bothered to explain it afterwords. Although yes, Arcadia could have been removed, but so could Tsavo Highway, Cortana, the first half of Halo (The last mission of Halo 3), everything in ODST except the last two missions, and all of Reach.

Really? What conclusion is there to Arcadia?

Tsavo Highway was a means to get to Voi for the assault on the Covenant AA defenses.

Cortana was a means to get the index and activate the new 04 which was critical to stopping the flood

Halo, their pelican crashed en route, and they were forced to clear out the initial flood infestation to get clearance to the Control Room. Again a means to get to an end like with Tsavo Highway.

The entire point of ODST was to find out what happened to the squad and what needed to be done prior to be separated.

B. They played it, but were looking for a good multiplayer like all halo games have, which it did not

I focused more on campaign than I did multiplayer, and let me tell you both were terrible.

Halo Wars had a great story

No it didn't

and killer cutscenes...

Graphics wise yes, but otherwise...

(best in any halo game).

*Facepalm*

In no way did Halo Wars have the best cutscenes. Graphically they were very pretty, and the animations were smooth, but the voice acting was stale, and so were the emotions on each and every face.

Don't even make me mention the scene where they all rush the three spartans.

1) Elites running in a straight line with literally no shields and spears against three spartans with automatic weapons and a shotgun makes no sense at all.

2) Why is it that spartans suddenly have the capacity to do gymnastics over elites, fully knowing that elites are the far more agile of the two, and are also 1-2 feet taller than spartans.

3) The last elite to be killed (Aside from the arbiter) just runs up to the spartan and grabs his gun and then literally stands there and does nothing as if he has extremely short term memory, and then guess what the spartan does. He literally takes half a second to look at the elite that grabbed his gun, and then proceeds to headbutt said elite. What the -blam!-. Did anyone ever try to take the time to make an action cutscene that didn't lower itself to 1970 karate movies?

Not to mention the many other screw ups in those cutscenes. Like getting experimental plasma tanks out of nowhere and using them to take down a plasma shield, "Oh that's right we have those experimental plasma tanks on board for just such an occasion".

So I have to say nay to your little acusation. The reason they went to Acarcadia was to, as stated before, follow the forerunner artifact. The problem isn't with why they left, but why did the forerunner device even point to Arcadia if they were not even going to use it in the central plot.

It's like mid movie the protagonist says "The clue leads me to believe that the murderer will strike here next" and then goes to that very spot and does nothing at all related to the murder and leaves it unresolved as the protagonists moves on with the story.

Halo wars had a terrible story, the gameplay wasn't half bad, but not enough for me to like it.

Here are my 2 impressions. Pick your favourite.

1) Play the game.
2) Opinion =/= fact.

And the SoF was involved in the Battle of Harvest. Isn't it natural to either fall back to another colony to defend it ,or to attack a known covenant force?

Actually, you made a very good reason as to Arcadia being important when you said Tsavo Highway was a means to getting to Voi. Arvadia was the road to Anders being kidnapped, which lead to the shield world.

As for plot significance, there really is none. It was simply a way of setting up Anders being kidnapped. Though what Arcadia might of been trying to do is set up a kind of example of how evil the covenant was. I mean, we started out the game fighting them on a desolate expanse of snow, ice and rock. Oh no we lost that block of ice over there to the purple aliens isn't nearly as dramatic, or emotionally inspiring as, oh no, did you see them shoot all those poor civilians?

And then when you fall back from Arcadia it shows you how destructive the covenant is, and then the scarab shows you how powerful they are.

Plot wise Arcadia wasn't significant, but it was in setting up a mood.

Tsavo Highway could have just been completely bypassed if Chief had gotten in a Pelican.

On Cortana he could have just crashed next to Cortana, instead of wasting all of that time running back and forth.

And we were talking about how it was bad storytelling for SoF to go to Arcadia right? So you're telling me it's good storytelling that the Pelican just happened to crash when it did, instead of anytime sooner? It just magically crashed the moment they got within walking range?

And don't get me started on ODST. The Rookie runs around, and (with the exception of Dare's helmet) magically figures out everything that they did prior to leaving said item behind. And Dare's helmet doesn't even show what Dare does, it shows what Buck does, which makes no sense whatsoever. Also, how did a Sniper Rifle leave a beacon for the Rookie to find?

In answer to the elites, it was early in the war, spartans were pretty new and unknown to the covenant. Those elites thought they were dealing with ordanairy marines.

Halo wars did have a great storyline, Althought I agree arcadia could have been cut. But without Arcadia, Anders wouldn't have been kidnapped, which wouldn't have led to the shield world.

The device on Harvest didn't lead to the shield world as it was out of Range. There was probally anther planet with directions to it.

I thought you went to Arcadia to get OMEGA team? that's how i saw it.

Actually the main theme of halowars was that shield world. Why isn't it like onyx? why are there a fleet of forerunner ships? why is the flood already on it?

the next book of cryptum is going to make EVERYBODY look at halowars differantly. hell im rebuying it today

It's like Halsey's "big discovery" on the Forerunner artifact on Reach. They set you up for something huge or a massive discovery but we never even know what it is, or it just doesn't happen.

Me too, i thought omega team was required. They needed Spartans and the Spartans needed to get the hell out of there.

Maybe the Shield Worlds are similar to Halo's in terms of how each Halo has different characteristics in terms of locale and function. [Gondolas in H2,Teleportation Grids in H1]

Maybe the flood had captured this Shield word, so the forerunners had no choice to abandon it. It would make sense as they had left everything behind, including their warships, knowing the flood could not have assess.

Cryptym states that shield worlds were made to attack the flood with precision and little damage, but you are right with the [fact] that there seems to be two types. A shield for attack and a shield for defense.

i had a theory a long long time ago that the shield world was the site MB and OB fought, which explained why there are damaged forerunner ships and rampant flood.

I'm afraid your Eclipse, Novas, and Forerunners mean nothing. If you don't have the skill to back up the rank, I'm afraid you don't deserve it.
Rank means nothing. Enjoy you credit hording.

In the major overall plot, they didn't need to discover the Forerunner artifact because they had dealt with the opposing forces. In the final cutscene Anders stated "But we still have so much to learn here." Which was referring to the Forerunner artifacts they passed on the way. However, Captain Cutter put her into Cryo. SoF reported All Hands Missing.

And about the Reach cannon:

Reach took place BEFORE ALL OTHER confrontations that gave detail. (Saying Halo Wars gave detail to the cannon is irrelevant. As the only Elite ranks you encounter are Honor Guards and Minors.)

Reason ranks no longer exist: The Field Marshall (Equivalent to a Brute Cheiftan.) was believe to have too much power among the elites and so were broken down into lesser ranks and the Field Marshall Status scrapped. Also the Great Prophets believed that if the Sangheili rebelled against the Covenate that the Field Marshall would have too much power on the battlefield and claim victory.

General's armor was replaced with the new, more advanced, Sangheili Combat Harness. Rank demoted to Field Master.

All other ranks exist however their armor was adapted to the new Combat Harness. Mostly loosing their detail and decoration in trade for combat efficiency.
