I've been wondering what Spartans do between their missions, are they allowed to "go outside" during their free time, or are they locked up in the military installations, preparing for the future assignements. How their casual life looks like, apart from killing stuff.

Well, what do we know about Spartans?

Most of them don't interact well with non-Spartans.
Some of them however settle into civillian life after the war.

So, How i see it is they would get R&R when possible, but most of them would choose to stay and train or be put in cryo. Those who do take R&R probably do so in a small group and stay away from civilians. (If nothing else ONI wouldn't want it's best Spec-Ops being humanized to the public eye)

As I have stated in nearly every Spartan thread I've posted in, who is going to say no to a 7 foot walking tank?

That's interesting, I though that Master Chief was the only Spartan who survived the war.

I kinda feel like Spartans wouldn't really grasp the concept of R&R. I mean when you read the books, you get the sense that their life is war. Without war they'd feel like they have no purpose. They live to fight. I'm thinking they'd probably still serve. I'm sure there would be more insurrections to put down, not to mention what is left of the Brutes.

"Question. Which Spartan is best?"
"That's a ridiculous question."
"False. Master Chief."
"Well, that's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought."
"Spartans shoot Sangheili. Spartans. Sangheili.....Battle Star Galactica."

I remember in one of the books a Spartan II was talking about how they were stuck on an island during their training...Might have been Grace but don't hold me to that. Apparently they made campfires and sat around and talked and ate calimari or something. That was when they were kids, though.

I think it's safe to say that they don't have much free time, and when they do they'd devote it to training.

Such is the life of a Spartan.

I am going to guess you haven't read the books.

No, in Halo CE he believed he was the last one, obviously after the loss at Reach.

We know:
Grey team, most of Blue, most of Gamma company, those Spartan IIs deployed to Earth and the Headhunters survive.

It's also possible that a SII class II and delta company are in training and an undefined number of Spartan III 'noble' type teams could have survived the war too.
