When Bungie has proven to be unable to write a decent story with developed characters for the past two (arguably three) games. Halo 3 wasn't all that bad, but it was a low point. ODST's premise was good, however the cast of characters were atrocious. And Reach makes the ODST squad look phenomenal, because Noble Team was a group of cliche combatants scene in umpteen movies and video games since the medium arose.

How can people look forward to Bungie's next Universe when they couldn't write decently for second half of the last one?

Because everyone's opinion is different and one opinion is not necessarily more "worthy" than another. Halo 3 was awesome, ODST was awesome, and Reach is awesome, yes I said it. Your opinions are not fact, you may think that Bungie sucks and can't create interesting characters or an interesting story, but others will disagree vehemently. I won't say that you are wrong, but I will say that your opinion is not law that we must all subscribe to.

Halo 3's original story was awsome, but the crappy version we got was due to a change in development, same for the uprising comic.

To be honest the games started sucking due to microsoft not giving bungie the time they needed. I hate how some games can take 4+ years to come out but halo has always been stuck around 3-4 years.

While i understand why the games sucked, that still doesn't change the fact the games sucked

The Ark was suppose to be on Earth, not outside of the galaxy.

This is an incredible step forward to being able to cure Downss sybndonre mn humans bineg.s

Because I think they'll be able to return to the glory of their earlier games if they have a fresh slate.

Agreed.

About Noble Team, I fail to see how they are so god-aweful character types.

I mean, is it so bad that a military squad has the 'archetypes' of a typical squad? Sniper, CQC/explosives expert, heavy weapons/support guy, team leader, tech specialist. If a squad was all tech specialists that'd be more stupid then a realistic grouping of skills.

There is a difference between atrocious and not fully fleshed out. Yeah they were what some could say bland however you didn't hate it whenever they were on screen.

And since when did Bungie say this? They used to have a level called Gauardian Forest. Early on in pre production, it was designed to be a fully fleshed out forest on the Ark . Yes I know Bungie said the Ark was the portal once, but really, what else would they say?

1)

Bungie: Its the Ark.

Us: Cool!

2) Bungie: Its a secret.

Us: Hmmmm....Must be the Ark!

3) Bungie: Its a portal to the Ark

Us: *spoilers*

There would have been no logical way for Bungie to explain what it was without everyone just assuming it was the Ark AND not giving away the game's plot twist: that the Ark was outside the galaxy.

Besides, Ark=boat, or platform or ship. Basically like Noah's Ark. For the original Ark to actually be the Excession.....it'd make no sense metaphorically and would've ruined the Forerunners' grand plan of bringing all life to live on the Ark.

TBH, the concept that the Excession was ever officially the Ark is ludicrous. The way it is fits better into the story.

Character=/=military squad position.

Character=personality, all of which Noble stereotyped in.

Badass black dude=Emile

Stoic leader=Carter

Gentle Giant=Jorge

Strong and independant women=Kat

Talks to much=Jun

My main problem is the characters showed no emotion at all (do NOT tell me "because they're Spartans;" that's just an excuse for -blam!- writing). I can accept stereotypical characters if they show some humanity.

Example: "Not gonna lie to you Lt.: You're stepping into some shoes the rest of the squad would rather leave unfilled." Whose shoes? Why would they rather leave them unfilled?

Another example is Carter's best friend dying (Kat) and him not reacting at ALL.

We don't see or feel anything from these characters. There is so much missed oppurtunity for these characters it truly is sad. They should have delved deeper into why everyone liked Thom, and maybe show a little hostility towards Noble 6 at first because of who he's replacing. Then towards the end they get to appreciate him more. We call this an "arc." That is, the characters change over time.

But instead we got an action movie with implied emotions.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Deliver Hope>Halo: Reach.

Because I still think the past Halo games were well written. Not the pinnacle of sci-fi, but they were still good. Yes, they had flaws, but point me to a story that doesn't.

I agree completely, I am prefectly willing to admit that most of Noble Team could have used more characterization, but I don't think a FPS can really do as much as people are wanting, at least not in one single game, the heroes of the Halo Trilogy, we had 2-3 games with them plus quite a few books expanding on their characters and fleshing them out even more, plenty of time to get to know and love them more. Noble Team? We've just been introduced to them, of course they're not going to have the same depth as characters who have been around for about 10 years and have had various media telling their stories all throughout that time.

Could Noble Team have used a little more work, probably, are they completely abhorrent characters with absolutely no depth at all, the answer is a big fat no.

Yeah, FPS games can't really get that much character development in.

That said, I felt Noble Team showed more emotion and had more development then Chief did through the trilogy.

character development can only happen if one makes multiple parts to the game and make sure its long. and write the script for a multi-part campaign game

The Halo trilogy characters were the best Halo characters in the Halo games,my opinion.

Gravemind,Thel,spark,cortana,johnson,117,...

You didn't play the same campaign I did if you believe that.

Beginning of the Package, Carter's voice is a good bit more depressed, he takes longer to respond to Holland and doesn't have the tone of voice he had before. He didn't scream out a darth vader NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, but he did respond.

I'll agree on most of that statement, but I'll state why.

Johnson, Miranda, Thel, even gravemind somewhat, were interesting because they had more time to get character development. Being in multiple games gave them that time.

The part I don't agree with is John-117 being the most awesomely developed character out there. You could play the games and you'd hardly know a thing about him. You wouldn't know his emotions or his troubles in alpha halo.

@cmr

Mendicant Bias is another awesome one, even from the terminals alone.

But even if you only look at Halo 2,Thel is still awesome.

I disliked Miranda in Halo 3 ,i hope Thel appears in Halo 4 again i like him far more then chief.

True. I believe Thel talked more/showed more emotion the Master Chief. That and he is pretty much the first Elite character of the games switched things up.

Also, after she dies and they're going to the extraction point he's cradling her body the whole time, as well as the emotional strain in his voice that you mentioned in the later portions.
