I suspect they thought that 3 Hog runs in 4 Halo games was just a bit too much, but yeah I missed it too.

They could have come up with something a bit more interesting and tense though. Playing through Halo Reach on Legendary... I just sat outside the Onager waiting for the Cruiser to get close enough, jumped inside, fired it once, game complete.

That's brilliant! I'm just about to complete my legendary solo run, and I had no idea how I was going to get through that part alive.

"Since that Cruiser is down, we can save Noble 6." - Captain Jacob Keyes in an Alternative Universe.

Stupid Canon =/

Doesn't anyone else wonder why they didn't send for Noble 6 after that Cruiser was taken down? They had time, I understand the canon reason was for Halo: CE but is there any reason that could fill it in? Such as there was no fuel for any Pelicans or such?
The ship was taking off no matter what, Keyes' pelican was already en route to the Autumn, there were still several phantoms and banshees in the skies, they already just lost a pelican that could've stood by and waited.

Not really a lot going for the "lets send another pelican out" option.
I blame the Pelican that got shot down, if it wasn't shot down then they could have ganged up on the Phantom carrying the Zealots and Emile would have survived, thus, saving Six from having to shoot the Onager and letting him go to the PoA.
Neither Pelican had missile racks.
No, but they had 70mm turrets, and from the level "ONI Sword Base" a couple bursts from a 70mm turret destroys a Dropship. If you were curious I was referring to the Anti-Air Auto Canon you active when you exit the base.
That cannon isn't 70mm. But you can shoot a Phantom down in New Alexandria, although it takes some effort - certainly too much time to prevent the elites from landing on top of Emile.

But then he'd be fully aware, and he could just shoot it with the Onagar.

Why did the cruiser engage the Autumn at point blank range?
Why didn't Keyes have the engines running and ready to go?
Why aren't any of the guns on the PoA firing?
Where is the air cover?
Where are the Archer missiles?
Why did all those Spartans who could've lived not get evacuated?
Why did the PoA not use it's MAC (and the resulting shock wave) to cripple any covenant advances on the ground and blow any aircraft out of the sky?
Why isn't 117 sent to help out?
Nukes anyone?
Kamikaze space stations/crippled ships?

All things that are wrong with that level.

Eh most of those questions were answered if you paid attention to the surrounding situations. Covenant have air superiority, the point defense guns on the PoA do fire, but only engage the air targets closest to it. Archers are likely not a viable option while docked as is the MAC gun, furthermore on that point there were friendlies down there too. Nukes just aren't even an option considering how close the Autumn and all friendlies are in relation to the cruiser. Either way it wouldn't deter the advances on the Autumn's flank which is where Six and the others were situated at.

Really the only things that aren't answered is what the deal is with the Chief, why didn't the cruiser use plasma torpedoes or something that didn't require it to be directly on top of the Autumn, and the most glaring inconsistency in my opinion that isn't up in your list and should be, in my opinion, is this:

Why is the cruiser incredibly slow when engaging the Autumn?

This has bothered me to no end because of one massive instance where this scenario can be compared to another scenario in the game rather than going into theoreticals with book canon and what not. In New Alexandria we bore witness to two cruisers sweep down from the skies, position itself in a rapid and graceful 180 turn, and proceed to glass the city like an eager jack rabbit in less than...what? 10-15 seconds? (rough estimate, I did not actually time this). Compare that to Pillar of Autumn where for some unknown reason the cruiser in that situation engages the Autumn at a pace best described as a snail.
Why this sudden slow down in speed? Dramatic build up be damned, it'd be far more exciting, and more importantly consistent in my opinion, if we were supposed to shoot down the glassing port of the cruiser as it barreled down the Autumn like a bat out of hell.

Obviously for gameplay, in canon, Six shot Maye twice. Bungie just wanted us to destroy some phantoms and have fun. In canon, it's likely six shot through a phantom and hit the cruiser.

/Speculation is accurate but still speculation

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

There was alot of Phantoms around the area, including Banshee's. It would have been too dangerous to attempt the extraction.

Anyways, Six knew what he was getting himself into.

Because they hadn't thought of Noble Six when they made Halo: Combat Evolved.

Where were Joseph Staten and Jason Jones when the story for this game was being written? Up until PoA it was bearable, but as a supposed "swan song" super-level to send out the Halo franchise it was really, really bad (story-wise. The gameplay was great.)

Jason Jones and Joe Staten had very little or nothing to do with the story of Halo: Reach or the game itself. I recall in a podcast that Joe and Jason were in fact working on the story for their next game. Truth is neither of these guys had much to do with the story/development of any Halo games after Halo 2. With the exception of the story/development of ODST which Staten had huge a role in.

OT: There is a lot of weird stuff in the entire story of Reach. I'm fine with retconning stuff like dates and some other (not so significant) stuff to further flesh out the game and the impact of the invasion. However, the game isn't always successful on telling the story especially with the retcons. The final level, PoA, was some-what of a disappointment because it had so much potential. Instead we get a 2 minute mongoose run and a firefight "like" gameplay towards the end of the mission where we defend and fight off waves of Brutes.

The good parts would be fighting the boatload of Elites and Skirmishers and fighting the Zealot squad at the end; but there should be so much more to this last level than what is presented in the final game.

That whole scene is strange for many many reasons. In such a critical situation Keyes should have sent all of his Marines in the Pelican to back up Noble Six. Its just strange to leave the fate of the entire ship up to a single Spartan, just seems like a bad call from the Captain.

Agreed, what if Noble 6 died prior to getting on the Mass Driver? They would all be dead.

It's called he knew Six could get the job done.

But since the fate of humanity is at stake, not to mention the lives of everyone on your ship, it would make sense to send some people to make sure everything worked out, no matter how skilled one individual may be.

Even with Master Chief they sent him Marines for important fighting.

Also, why did Keyes go on the pelican? That was a really good way to get killed. Just imagine if his pelican got shot down instead of the other one?

Keyes is dead, POA doesn't crash safely on Halo. Alpha base can't get the supplies it needs. Master Chief can't get around Halo and doesn't know about the "weapon stash" so he isn't there to fight the Flood.

From here there are two options:

1) 343 manages to fire Halo, everyone dies.

2) Flood overruns Halo, MC dies, Operation FIRST STRIKE never happens and Earth is glassed by a massive Covenant armada.

So was it really worth getting on that pelican Captain Keyes?

/speculative rant.

No Keyes and Cortana woudln't have been on the POA, it wouldn't have gone to Halo, the flood wouldn't have been unleashed and Halo 1, 2 and 3 wouldn't have happened.
