Subject: Population of "Earth" BEFORE the invasion of Earth.

So it was said in the Bestiarium that there were 200 million survivors after the war with the Covenant. Although did it mean Earth or Humanity altogether? Because there were at least 4 other colonies that were never found by the Covenant, one of them containing 500 million humans, those being Minister, Forseti, Lenapi, Tribute, Cygnus.

What was the population of Earth, just Earth, before the Invasion of the Covenant? In the billions?

A lot of people are saying 200 billion. In just a month it was reduced to 200 million. How were so many killed in so little time?

It's 300 Million on Earth, not humanity itself.

The Bestiarium says 200 Million, where is your source of 300?

Rough estimate? Well, basically it's around those digits.

You have answered your own question. It must have been Earth. Forseti has a higher population than what the Bestiarium says, so it can only be talking about Earth now.

I remember reading that the overall population of -blam!- sapiens sapiens had been reduced by 99%. Relatively, numbers that low haven't been seen since our fragile but bold species dared leave Africa.

somewhere out in the expanse of space beings far greater in both emotion and intellect are looking down on us and pissing themselves laughing.

which will be a high figure as that 1% of over 200 billion.

If 200 billion is 1%, then the population before the Human-Covenant War was staggering. The people that have done the genetic work think that because of volcanic and climatic conditions, our species numbers could've been reduced to a number as low as 1000. I was simply drawing a far-off parallel, lol.

But my mind is not at rest, for questions linger on

Anyone know the names of these last four colonies?

humanity right now has a population of almost 7 billion. I'm sure it'd get much bigger in the future, but many of them colonized other planets, so it's pretty safe to say more than 3 billion.

Minister, Forseti, Lenapi, Tribute, Cygnus. The latter 2 are "maybes" as they were systems that were attacked by the Covenant, but they appear to have Human presence on them after the war.

I can almost say with absolute certainty that 1% is not 200 billion. I think he meant million. However, we do not know what the population before the war was nor do we know exactly how many are left, so we cannot work out any percentages here.

We don't know. I don't even know where somebody got the information Earth had billions.
We have billions currently. To be precise we currently have around 7 Billion people on the planet. It would only make sense for the population to exponentially increase.

  • 04.10.2011 10:16 AM PDT

Before the Invasion? I'm thinking around 20 billion. Can't recall where I heard that figure, but I'm sure I heard it somewhere.

Reach had only 700 million, and it's larger than Earth.

I thought the reason they started to colonize other planets was to get rid of Earth being overpopulated. Today it's just not possible.

  • 04.10.2011 10:22 AM PDT

There was about 20 billion humans on Earth before the Covenant invasion.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Before the Covenant showed up in 2552? Probably around 20 billion.

  • 04.10.2011 10:25 AM PDT

Well I have no idea but it would think it was in the billions before the attack since it is now and human population is only going up.

  • 04.10.2011 10:49 AM PDT

Everyone seems to be saying 20 billion. Does anyone have a source?

  • 04.10.2011 1:42 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

200 Billion is a ridiculous and fantastical figure. The Earth could not sustain that number of people. 20 billion would be more realistic, although it'd still require massive amounts of resources brought in from other planets.

That's why they had colonies in the first place. Earth started sucking them dry of their resources, leaving nothing for the colonists, much how in a feudalistic society the Noble (Earth) takes a large portion of the serfs (Colonists') food and resources. It left them with next to nothing, which is why the Insurrection started.

200 million X 100 = 20 billion. Percentages = worked out.

Why do you assume that 1% of the Human population before the war is equal to 200 million?

We know that Earth has 200 million survivors. Forseti has 500 million survivors. There are 4 other colonies on top of these that we have names for and possibly more that we do not have names for; all of which we know not how many people inhabit them. That means that we cannot know how many Humans survived the war. We also cannot know how many existed before the war either, despite knowing the death toll.
