In 500 years humanity will be on par/beyond Covenant. The tech in UNSC is odd. We won't be using bullets in 50-100 years, and if we are it will be magnetic rail based not gunpowder based.

There is nothing to prove that. Heck, didn't they say we should all have hover cars by now?

Oh, if you pay attention to the halo canon, UNSC didn't do any weapons research after it could leave the system, instead focusing entirely on colonization and related things. They only restarted it due to rebels popping up.

as for being 'pessimists', I say realists. Maybe overdoing it saying we'll all kill each other quickly, but at the current trend? Yeah all everybody cares about it seems is military advancement. A culture cannot evolve/ advance is all they care about is making a bigger gun.

As a friend said about humanity once, "We have weaponized everything." Expands that to "We find a new resource that could be an awesome fuel source/ replace something we use today which is not as good. Guess what they do to it first? Turn it into a bomb or weapon of some kind."
Exactly. When we first discovered nuclear fission what did we do? make a atom bomb.

im pretty sure we'll destroy ourselves in a nuclear war before 500 years come around.

Kay. Why the -blam!- does everyone always say this?
Humanity is NOT a stupid and barbaric race. We will overcome ANYTHING that is put in our way.

The U.S. is at war with Iraq and Afghanistan.

The funding for the wars is about $150billion a year

The general consenus is the war is pointless and going no where.

NASA's funding is about 26 billion a year

The U.S. cut funding to "less important" operations to conserve cash. Of the two above, NASA was the one that was cut.

And we're not barbaric?

Old habits die hard.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Theoretically, we might not even exist anymore.

Anyways, it is quite hard to predict. We have gone from nothing to what we have now in 500 years. How could you change that equation to what we have now to 500 years from now? I'm sure we will have similar advancements like that of the Halo Series in 500 years.

One thing you must think about is a good amount of the technology was developed to fight the Covenant. Unless a deadly extraterrestrial force comes up somewhere between now and then, the advancement could go in a completely different direction and maybe even a different pace.

If we were to get anywhere a few things need to happen as some have stated. A new alternative energy source that is renewable with 0 emissions and is basic enough that it would be found on many outlying planets. Why? Because we might figure out a way to make "fuel" strong and last longer, but that will most likely leave us on the other side of the galaxy saying, crap, ran out of fuel, to bad we cant get it anywhere else. I honestly think perpetual motion is possible despite "laws of physics." Why? Because Mankind made the laws of physics and Mankind is not always right obviously. When some laws are written certain technology may not have existed, leaving us to assume its not possible.

Another thing is air. We need it of course. One idea that was discussed by my science teacher and I was if humans were to distribute invasive species of plants and trees to outlying planets. Even the moon. Giving at least a large amount of seeds per species to each plant. Further increasing the odds that one is genetically special enough to thrive and grow on the resources around it. Its a step that needs to be taken now if humans are ever to travel even as far as Mars and actually live on it.

That's my 3 1/2 cents. Awesome topic, thanks.

US focusses more on war then space colonisation.

If the world keeps being that stupid, humans will die out.

Not going to deny it, but your spelling makes you seem like an angry Briton.

Anyways, considering we have 70% of the technology in Halo already (at the very least in it's earliest stages of development) assuming we don't blow ourselves up, and can find a decent energy source, we should outpace Halo in 500 years.

We will be far in advance. That UNSC is so messed up.

On one hand they can make themselves invulnerable or invisible.

Yet on the other hand they can't fire their guns too fast or their bloom will reduce their accuracy, no wonder Reach got glassed, the covenant had host and a more consistent bloom....

-Why?

-UNSC have colonised 800 planets, terraformed most of them and build entire cities on them and provide food for billions of peope on these planets. In these days,we can barely give food to a few millions of poor people around the world. So just having a decent energy source isn't enough,a good step but not even enough.

What's the point of having just an energy source,if you continue to use it for warfare?Discard your weapon research foolish Humans.

That depends on what kinds of technologies are possible to develop, not if we will develop them. I suspect we will find out soon enough if such technology can even be made fairly soon. We are already coming close to combining self-replicating programming (a program that can write other programs) with self-correcting programs. I wouldn't be surprised if we develop a primitive form of A.I. in the next few decades.

Once we do so, progress will become far more rapid. Computer programs will be able to increase their own intelligence and improve on themselves exponentially faster than any group of humans would be able to. All technological fields will grow far more rapidly.

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Slightly above UNSC standards.
Especially if we dont recieve any outside influence.

Not even close. It's called SciFi for a reason.

FTL travel won't happen. While we probably will find a way to leave our solar system it will be a life long travel and will probably be doomed the first few tries.

Projectile weapons are already better than what's depicted in Halo.

Energy weapons will be around for sure.

Mass Drivers will be around but who knows when it comes to their potency.

Anti gravity is more realistic than artificial gravity.

Orbital elevators will never happen.

Medicine will probably be a lot farther along than in the Halo universe. Making people stronger and smarter will only get better.

Vehicles will be a lot better.

Soldiers will be replaced by robots of some kind.

There's probably a good chance that this is all moot since we will probably kill most of humanity way before the timeline comes to pass.

-Focussed, colonised, typical "all wars are America's fault attitude"

-800 planets within UNSC territory =/= 800 planets colonized. Not to mention that the UNSC has a lot of planets like Harvest, almost solely dedicated to producing agricultural goods for the rest of the UNSC.
In these days,we can barely give food to a few millions of poor people around the world. So just having a decent energy source isn't enough,a good step but not even enough.

What's the point of having just an energy source,if you continue to use it for warfare?Discard your weapon research foolish Humans.

A large part of my energy source comment involved Earth just surviving the next few centuries. Without a cleaner, less limited replacement for oil, which oh so much of our technology runs on, we probably won't last the next 500 years.

And in a society without war, there is constant over-population and scramble for resources. Humanity cannot sustain itself without war. Even assuming we covered every solid mass in the galaxy with farms and houses, eventually we'd run out of something we need to survive.

  • 04.12.2011 3:35 PM PDT

I know it was just an example, but if humanity eventually covered every single spot on the galaxy and have depleted everything, then it's so far into the future intergalactic travel is probably a fact.

as long as you can make money then yes. plus most technology that is discovered is first used in military and once cheap enough becomes common.

I agree with the majority of your statement, but this part is completely wrong. Energy weapons are inferior to firearms in a variety of ways. They're just not practical.

I wish ignorance was a plague.

Think about it. We only developed cars just over 100 years ago. Given another 500, we will advance quite a bit.

With the current progress in quantum physics, I'd say FTL (most likely unmanned at first) could happen in as little as 220 years from now.

About me: I am a vicious wolf of a man.

But really am sweet at heart. =)

We already match the UNSC in some areas.

At the rate technology is increasing at the moment, I wouldn't be surpised if we were at the UNSC's tech level for space travel by the turn of the century.

And your reasoning for this? We are just now starting to learn about physics and particles that we didn't even know existed. Some of the things we are learning are actually setting a lot of our theories about physics backwards. We, like a middle aged person, are starting to learn that we really don't have a good hold on theoretical physics.

Things that people only dreamed about 200 year ago are now commonplace.

IMO most likely we will be far beyond UNSC tech possibly covenant. If not that I think we wont exist or be around early 1800s tech.
