Just finished Reading Halo Evolutions and while a great book i am abit peed off.

Now obv the human covenant war was more or less the covenant pushing back humanity further and further with billions killed. They were literally just wiping them out.

As a halo verteran for eight years i get the story i know humanitys back is against the wall.

What irritates me is that in that entire book of short stories not one single character from the UNSC survives. What pushed me over the edge was the Headhunters story. Here you have two spartans who unlike most other spartans that Halo authours write about actually have human emotions rather than just machines.

I understand that they were not made to be stand up comedians but at the same time i think the lack of emotion that authours portray them in makes them almost stunted characters except for the random "splurge" of feeling, like the time John 117 got the runs..

Instead of having just for a change a good ole fashioned victory story both Spartans get killed. I will reiterate again that i have no problem with sad endings. In my english A levels i studied greek and shakesperian tradgies for crying out loud so i have no problem with a sad ending or at the least a suspense.

What jirates me is every single story regarding the UNSC is one of woe and it makes the reader fell "o for ef sake just bend over and take it Master Chief! Mendez get the oil!!"

Just the occasional "win" story for the UNSC please and a well done to Jonathan Goff for giving Spartans half decent emotions!!

The one that Eric Nylund wrote would fall in the "win" category wouldn't it?

Signatures are for squares.

All the spartans lived in Blunt instruments, as did the soldiers in Palace Hotel. And don't forget Cole most likely being alive as well...

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

The UNSC is made up of dead heroes.

How many elites were at the end of Headhunters? I remembered it being a lot. A normal elite can go toe-to-toe with a Spartan II strength-wise. Now make those elites invisible and give them swords. Now make those Spartans into the 14ish year old Spartan IIIs with weaker armor.

And now you have two dead Spartans.

I realize that wasn't really what the thread was about, but I had to address that. Other people are handling the OP's actual point.

I felt the same way about Halo Legends. Arbiter dies. the spartans from homecomming and babysitter dies. ghost dies. mc is still MIA in origins. the only positive one was the package, even though two spartans die but it doesn't really matter.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

War can be so inconvenient in the the living department.

The headhunters achieved their objective right? They were spartans, they knew what they were getting into and that in the end their lives were expendable in might of their missions. Thats why they had a backup plan with the explosives incase things went south.

They didnt lose or waste their lives, they spent them in the defence of earth and her colonies. All good commanding officers know the difference between a lost life and a spent life, not that they dont feel every death under their command either way, and seeing as you felt the same rage and regret that they might, id say the story successfully engaged you. Mission accomplished!
