Delusions and Grandeur.

A certain thought came into my head when thinking about Spartans. It was: Since Spartans are enhanced the way they are, will they be able to live longer than the average human?

Think about it. Spartans go through a lifetime of training, boosting the growth of an already greater-than-average-strength six-year-old. On top of their increased discipline(and their indefinite increase in body build), they also went through genetic/cybernetic augmentation, which brought them above and beyond their previously improved strength.

Now, this increased strength, speed, agility and intelligence obviously did something to the Spartans. If Spartans were essentially better in every way, shape, and form; would that mean that they would age better, as well (meaning, retaining their athletic ability and being more immune/stronger against problems that normal people face, e.g., disease, stress, etc)? Or, would their increase in growth also be equaled out with an increase in deterioration after a certain age?

To answer that we would have to know what "average" age is for a person living in 2552. However I would say yes granted they don't get blown up or glassed.

Yes, it's known for a fact that they do live slightly longer due to being in cryosleep for extended periods of time. Beyond that, I have no idea.

Not to be a d$#k, but there's another post the same as this a few places down.

  • 04.12.2011 6:45 PM PDT

Yes, really

Well, they were given MASSIVE amounts of chemicals to enhance different things. I'm guessing Cardiac muscle was also enhanced, as well as the Circulatory system(Heart/circulatory problems are the leading cause of death today). Unless the leading cause of death (Excluding Covenant armada's) changed between now and 2552, they should vastly outlive the average Human.

Dickery aside, our threads do have their differences. I just realized about 10 seconds after I made this thread that a similar thread was located just down the page.

Nonetheless, that thread in question refers to the lifespan of an average spartan, according to my parameters (worded differently, and with different intentions in mind. And obviously, made before I even thought of it). My thread simply asks whether or not they will exceed the standard human age, after taking the reasonings into account.

Very well, I stand rebuked. As I stated before, I imagine a Spartan will live 25%-50% longer then the average human.

Racism isn't wrong if it's funny.

Yes. They also live longer as a result of slpispace travel.

"Ignorance is a plague."

Close, but the plague killed those infected with it, and the ignorant are still alive.
I wish ignorance was a plague.

Well Johnson was part of the original Spartan project and he was at least 70 years old.

Hanger one I just shredded with the SMGs until ammo was out and I just threw 'nades like a boss while BRing.

My experience playing Cairo Station on Legendary

We can assume human life is well over 80, as today, Canada has an average life expectancy of late 70's, so in 500 years, it can only get better.

We much also take into consideration the Slip Space time. What may appear to be an in-and-out Slip Space jump may very well be 2 weeks long! Thus, the "age" is not true to the physical age. I guess LITERALLY John may be 41, but physically, he may very well be in his late 20's to 30's.

  • 04.12.2011 7:25 PM PDT

As I said in my post a couple of threads down, a good example would be Jorge, he is 42 yet has seen almost thirty years of action and shows no signs of breaking or slowing. With a body that reflects an Olympic Athlete except being able to lift three times their body weight and standing over 7 feet tall.

They would indeed still be fit once they hit their older ages thus giving them a healthier body to boost their lifespan, but it's we don't know for sure if their Augmentations gave their body a positive effect. I'm sure Onyx, Megamuffin, or StealthSlasher, or one of the others have this information.

Well they're usually in cryo anyways. Master chief was in his forties in Halo 3 but he fought and raped ass like he was 18 years old.

SPARTANs are such mysterious creatures, I always wonder about them, like why i've never seen one eat a snack before, but i found out the answer to that question a couple of months back.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

I don't think they would be affected the same way as regular humans when they aged. For example, a normal man will get arthritis once he reaches his 60's and such, they wouldn't due to their bone augmentations which pretty much make them unbreakable.

Other things would pretty much be the same in my opinion.

I think it was 82, to be precise. Perhaps 84.

i think it was 82. ironic that he was one of the first to fight and was the last death of the war.

He wasn't the last death, The whole event with the game happened in December, but the last conflict happened in March, 3 months later. Yes, he was in his mid 80's, but this is solely due to Cryo-Sleep.

Well, basically, he was the last death from the Human - Covenant war, seeing how the conflict ended when Truth died, the rest of the battles were mostly aftermaths. Funny, he saw the beginning and the end of the war.

Bungie Pentathlon - who actually cares ?

Technically we still don't know what happens to Spartans in their latter years.

Surely the endless fighting and enhanced physical stresses would take their toll, no matter their augmentations - wouldn't be surprised to hear of a Spartan collapsing and subsequently flatlining due to sheer exhaustion.

You really thing the UNSC will let billion dollar soldiers retire? No Spartan worth his/her salt would ever die in bed anyway.

One of the Sprtans retired in one of the graphic novels - you try telling a Spartan they can't hang up their titanium codpiece.

It's hard enough to get the life expectancy answer for normal humans, due to cryosleep and slipspace travel plus advances in medical technology. SPARTANs may live longer, they may live shorter. There can be arguments made on behalf of an increased expiration date, due to a SPARTAN's tremendous physical advantages, but, as the old saying goes, "the candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long". It could be entirely possible that the supersoldiers, while superior for the rest of their lives, may not actually live as long. Unlikely, but possible.
