VALVe have today begun to pre-load Half-Life 2 on to Steam, allowing Steam users to download the game before it is released. This could be a sign that Half-Life 2 will be officially released very soon, and can be seen as a possible confirmation of the September release date.

*Ahh, Gordon Freeman, my other video game hero*

Interview with Gordon

Good to see, I'm still angry about that damn keylogger that delayed the game...

  • 08.27.2004 6:22 AM PDT

It wasn't the keylogger. The game wasn't complete in September 2003. Even Gabe said that they had been a tad optimistic.

Yeah, I don't think anyone ever really believed September. At least they didn't rush it...I wonder how long the crowbar animations took. ;-)

Damn, now I've got to go to the store to cancel my pre-order; I had forgotten back then (over a year ago) that I could simply get it over Steam before it even came out. Well, I've got it. Now all I have to buy is a CD key.

OMG teh pre-load is done!1!1! Yay.

...now I get to stare at the unusable GCF for a few weeks. ^_^'

Very good news, though. I only hope it is indeed coming soon and not simply being released to get the frothing masses off their backs for a couple more weeks. It is only asthetic data that won't change between now and release after all.

What is Steam, is it like an illegal copying thing.

I will definitely grab the X-Box version. I vow to never upgrade my computer again. (The bill is just TOO much)

It's VALVe's (relatively) new content management system. All their games are available on there. Basically, it's a way for them to make more money, but it does mean that you don't ever have to patch your game again.

But do you download it from there but you pay them? Because you said that all of there games are available on there.

The game is downloaded to your hard drive, but you need a good serial number to play them. Basically, you entire Valve game collection becomes one with the internet, so if your drive gets reformatted you can just reinstall Steam and redownload every Valve game you own. Also, the games automatically update now and you can use something akin to AIM in Steam to keep track of your pals and talk to them in-game.
