MSXL pretty much has went through it's "ice age". It seems that I am addicted to starting successful online projects, and with every new one I start, MSXL gets thrown on the back burner. The problem is, with MSXL, I took care of all the content, all the time. Granted, there were a few vids that people helped out with, but almost everything was done by me. I ran the contests ( anyone remember the quiz contest?!), the content, the news, etc etc.

Eventually I hired on some dedicated staff members, and it was at this point that we were at our peak. The staff was doing their job with gathering news and moderating the forum, and I was doing mine with pumping out cool/funny stuff. But eventually, when the staff got less excited, and started slacking, then I got kinda overwhelmed.=)

Remember the Quiz Contest? You mean the Quiz Contest I WON?!?!?!? Sure, I remember. I even remember winning that coffee mug, cap, LANFest T-Shirt, and stickers. I'm still proud. [Can't you tell?]

But, to be honest, I think the deathblow to the 7C was H2 on XBL. After all, if I remember correctly, one of the main reasons for even starting the Column was to help people all over the world organize LAN events. Sure, other things were organized (like the Quiz Contest), but in general most events were LAN parties. For whatever reason, interest in those events waned (possibly from XBConnect?). That caused a huge dip in chapter activity.

Sure, then H2 came around, and everyone was excited to TALK about it. But people mainly wanted to PLAY it. Events pretty much lost value--both because the feature was disabled and because they became less necessary with the addition of Halo [at least the one everyone wanted to play the most] now being playable from anywhere on Earth with anyone else on Earth.

Thus, the death of Events became the deathblow to the Column. The 7C (does anyone still use that abbreviation) is now pretty much crawling along, barely clinging to life as it waits to be defibulated (sp?).

What do I think the 7C needs? Well, I haven't been around for a while so I'm not sure how much stock you can put in my idea. But I think the 7C needs to be organized to DO something. People run out of things to TALK about.

What sort of things can we DO? I don't know. Think. Maybe we need to come up with exciting new H2 challenges. Maybe do them in the pattern set by Bungie's Humpdays. If you want H2 players to get excited about the chapters, then make sure they have something related to PLAYING H2 to get excited about.

Maybe a chapter/clan could spend a week talking about their next chapter/clan that they plan to challenge--sort of a Pep Rally--and then they can sum up what happened during the challenge.

That's my 2:00 a.m. advice. Take it or leave it.

Just my thoughts,
Poocho :)

Moap has died down a bit mostly because its not summer anymore. Most of our members are high school students so they can't stay up as late anymore heh. Seems like we are always most active during the summer months.

That's exactly what had happend with UNSC Ground Battalion! In the summer we ere super active with around 300 members now its at 330 and not more than 10 ppl post at all.

Although i'm happy to report that Marine Core is doing well, having a little trouble gettin them to go the Marine Corps but thats OK i can always get new members. I think a name like that would go well with people, even after the release of Pimps at Sea. XD

Very good points, Poohcho! You're right, the 7th C was designed with events in mind... now, there really is no defined way to plan them with the current Group settings! I used to use the events module all the time to plan different online events, and other events in my area. I wish that would return.

You also make a good point concerning XBL. Since Live came out, I barely do LAN parties anymore! They're much more fun, but with better servers and less lag, you get a pretty close experience online, without having to drag around a bunch of tvs and xboxes.

I don't really have a resolution though... more just confirming what you said, haha.

Oh, sorry about that. I guess I'm still not used to the new lingo . . . well, new as of a year and a few months ago, I guess.

A chapter is what we used to call groups. Then the "New Hotness" came around (i.e. bungie.net and the 7th Column were updated), and the new name for chapters became "groups." That's what those of us who follow the rules (evidently not me) now use.

Did I clarify, or just make things worse?

Just my thoughts,
Poocho :)

  • 01.25.2006 4:31 AM PDT

Well, technically "groups" includes both chapters and Halo 2 clans. It's just that the word "chapter" isn't mentioned in any "official" place on bungie.net.

  • 01.25.2006 6:03 AM PDT

ahhh...chapters. Chapter is an evil way of saying group, but you have to be darker to use it properly. I can't do it, cause every time i do it sounds stupid. Group, i can say, and clan, i can say, but chapter?...nah uh.

Back on subject though, activity, at least in OFG, has been increasing. And for one simple reason: Things are moving with the group. For anyone who has a group that is slowly fading away, there's only one thing you need to do to bring back that spark of life: make room for people to do something, but without overloading them.

In OFG, we've been on a constant campaign to get more members and be the only fanfic group (thus, official), where everyone who has a fic can post it there, no hands down. We've been trying to not just be named OFG, but actually be the Official Fanfic Group. Recon promised that if we got something going, we'd be acknowledged by bnet for it.

However, perhaps the one big mistake that was made was purging our members. Because realistically, it didn't help. All it did was make that thing on the front page say 53 instead of 285...and if the activity doesn't change, then something's wrong with the group, not the people.

But after making a ton of changes and getting alot of people to work on different stuff (resourcing, indexing, setting up clan matches, etc), the group is becoming active again. Much more active than before. Now we've got review's, the contest, a new chapter fanfic (which, by the way, is totally awesome), and much construction going on simultaneously. Its great, and we've been setting up different groups to ally ourselves with to become more widespread so we can get those fanfic authors and readers into the group.

The downside to doing all this of course is that i've become very burdened by it. I'm glad to do it, and most people know i spend too much time on bnet anyways (whatever that means), but its alot of work. If you don't have the time, then don't make a group. Making something that people won't just check once a week to see if anyone's posting doesn't mean anything, you can go make a blog instead and just talk to yourself. But making a group great takes alot of time and effort. And by God, i'm going to get it done...even if it kills kilroy.

yeah mine only has 25 members im the original founder, but yeah goldhawk and somebody i completely forget about helps co-rule it, we are pretty active especially with our new theme being introduced today. im happy. oh and i had an old one called mark vi maniacs, 65 members in like 3 weeks, then the damn conquerors got to it. i was so pissed, ive made like 4 groups since september when that happened, but none of them got into the air, mark vi avengers died, same withe specOps, halo expansionists, orbital drop odsts, but now airborne is doing pretty well.

Heh, The Pretender Great. XD

My group is just surviving. We have 700 members, but most of those are not active due to the strife that previously plagued our group. But a few fights and lockdowns later, we have emerged stronger and ready to grow. Long live Chaos Redefined!

MSXL: The Last Honest Chapter

It's lame, but how many members you have truly will effect how many members you get in many cases. If someone sees you already have tenure here, and a lot of members, they are much more likely to join, because it is easier for them to dissolve into the masses. Don't be discouraged if you have a small chapter though... everyone starts out small. Thanks to everyone for voting in this poll! It's amazing to me how close it is.

When a chapter has a small or big number count, I still won't join if they have no resourses. Resourses show that Founders are putting effort and time into their group, and not just relaying on members for activity.

It totally agree with that. When setting up a group, the 1st thing i usually do is consider my resources.

But unfortunately, there really aren't many options for customizeabilty with the current set of resources. MSXL used to have a bunch of great "resources" in the original 7th Column. But over half of them had to be removed when everything got changed, simply because there is now no way to do what we did with the old version. Resources are great, but I am expecting drastic improvements in future 7thC versions.

I just realized this overnight (I work nights), but you might be forgetting the audience that is receiving your poll: it's all active members. Generally speaking, active members produce active chapters. Since we're even posting, that means that we actually DO something on Bungie.net. And most of us don't just cruise the forums (at least, I don't think so)--we spend some time doing stuff in chapters. So we almost have to have active chapters.

Now, if everyone with membership on B.net were forced to answer the poll, then I'm sure the results would be much different.

Did all that make sense? Cleaning floors all night can kind of wear out your body and brain.... 8-(

We're hoping to also work in some time in the coming months to work on the 7th Column groups to make them more... well... more full featured again.

No promises, but Sketchfactor and I have not forgotten about the 7th Column.

What is the 7th Column?

Its Bungie's underground army. Or more specifically, the fans and chapters that make up Bungie.net.

A good though, but the only kind of member I want to survery is those that are active/sem-active members. It is quite possible to be a relatively active member, but not have an active chapter... trust me. *whistles*

This is very true. The only active chapter I've ever made is Body Politic, and that didn't start until 2005. And until around that time, I wasn't really active in any chapters - the main forums were always my home.
