Subject: Is Reach a moon?

Living under a bridge all of your life has it's consequences.

The books and the games say that Reach is a planet, but on the misson Long Night of Solace, there is a gas giant pretty damn close to the planet, in galactic terms. Either Bungie screwed up the distancing, Reach is now considered a moon, or (by some kind of space anomaly I've yet to learn of) Reach somehow acquired a very small gas planet as a moon. I think was the first or the second one. I'm just nit picking here and it's just kind of been bugging me for about an hour now.
Discuss.
NOTE: This has been moved from the Reach forum due to numerous off topic replies, sorry if you saw this there.

It could be. Moon's usually hang around gas giants don't they?

But Halo and RL space are two different things.

It's a planet. Although I do agree that the moon is too close for comfort. Whenever I look at it, I half expect it'll crash into the planet.

Lol, the covenant would be nothing compared to that.

Delusions and Grandeur.

As I stated in the Reach forum, Reach is definitely not a moon, as the body located in Reach's horizon does not completely dominate the horizon, and is therefore the moon in the equation.

In Canon and such it probably isn't considered a Moon, but to me, It is. Why else would it be so close to a Gas Giant? It could be similar to Titan in a way. A planet that was possibly pulled into another planets gravitational pull.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

It is theorized that a moon could have a moon of its own. The host moon would need a rather large orbit around the host planet to counteract the planet's own gravitational force, but apparently there have even been asteroids recorded with their own moons, so who knows.

In Reach's case, I think it's probably just a planet with an incredible view. The real estate most be astronomical!

The gamertag linked to this account is an old one. My new one is James Voe Guy.

It very well could be. Jupiter has moons. I'm pretty sure that scientists hold out the most hope of finding life on moons rather than planets like earth. You may have found an interesting peice of cannon here haha.

"Time was your ally human. But now it has abandoned you. The Forerunners....have returned. And this tomb... is now yours". - The Didact

Or the forerunners moved those moons to close to the Reach, but shouldn't those clone moons affect Reach alot with their gravitional pull?Like massive earthquakes, large tidal wafes, planet unstable,...and yet Reach seems to be in good shape.

Maybe the forerunner crystals gravity power affects the moons too.

Remember that before Pluto got degraded from planet status, it's moon was 1/3 of its size, so Reach's moon is relatively small in comparison. The one difference that Reach probably has is that the tides would be crazy. I guess that's why all the settlements are high above sea level.

What are we supposed to be discussing here Shepard?

Are we talking about the moon Csodaszarvas? Or is there something I missed in the game?

  • 04.14.2011 4:51 AM PDT

maybe Reach has a very elliptical orbit, like Pluto does, there are points in Pluto' orbit where it can be very very close to Neptune, theoretically Pluto could be captured by Neptune sometime in the future and become a moon itself. so Reach could just be at a point in its orbit that brings it very very close to a Gas Giant, makes it a dangerous place to set up the most important colony mind since planets like that one would imagine eventually get unlucky.

  • 04.14.2011 4:57 AM PDT

Ah! Never thought about that before, but now that I think about it... Reach does seem like a moon. Isn't that always the pattern? One big ass gas giant and a bunch of moons that can semi-support life?

the "gas giant" is called Csodaszarvas, and is actually one of reach's moons.

  • 04.14.2011 6:46 AM PDT

my guess is that reach doesn't revolve around the gas giant so it wouldn't be a moon.

  • 04.14.2011 7:32 AM PDT

I don't care. I really don't.

What he said.

Just because it has an atmosphere and rings doesn't mean it's automatically a gas giant; in this case, it's not even its own planet, but the planetoid in question is the largest of Reach's moons.

  • 04.14.2011 9:19 AM PDT

At first I thought that because the ring oned looked like a gas giant reach was a moon but if you let the intro play you will see the "gas giant" is very close to reach and not all that much bigger. Obviously reach can not be close the size of a gas giant or there would be way to much gravity for humans to even move. So I think it may by just a smaller planet with a very thick atmosphere and they are orbiting around eachother, Like pluto and it's moon.

that doesnt prove its not a moon pictures taken of earth from the moon dont fill the entire sky but im pretty sure the moon is a moon.

I wouldn't trust what urk says about Reach. Just look at the campaign for the game. Completely craps on canon.
