There is a certain lack of creativity in the chapters.

Like, if you look at how many chapters there are... and how many Myth chapters there are...

Well, there's only 1 either way. :/

You know you could make a group for other Bungie games. I haven't seen a gnop or Halo PC group anywhere?

Well, you know as well as everyone else does, that 99% of people on here are here for Halo 2 x-box. So i guess it's expected.

i'm trying to start a new group for geeks, the 13th warrior

basiclly its a place to talk about movies, comics, music, whatever you geek out about, you know like who would win between batman and master chief. the answer is batman, because he's a cheater. if he couldn't beat master chief in a fair fight, he'd just spry him with water until he rusted, or pull out some BAT-Master Chief Repelant Spray!!!!

There aren't too many. If people want to make an ODST group then I'll be damned if I'm going to try and stop them. Sure, there are a lot, but never too many. The old dead ones will get deleted with time, and we'll be left with the old active ones and new ones and so on. It's a cycle.

I think that the uniqueness is still there, but there are just so many other groups that are drowning it out.

Survival of the fittest. Until bungie says that the multitude of similar groups are hurting things let people join what they want to join. We limit similar group names and styles what next?

There seem to be many groups about the same idea. Covenant themed groups, military themed groups, helping Bungie.net groups.

You guys remember BDI (Bungie Defence Initiative)? Theme: Educate everyone blaming Bungie for things that are not Bungie's fault. Discussions: Which is better: Salt or Pepper?

I have learned that very, very few people are interested in thought provoking discussion. Which is why BP has only about 20-25 active members, or my group only has 6 or 7. Members are more interested in being part of big groups that will make them famous. Why do you think MBT has so many members, though the only people who post are regulars? "Hey, if I join this group, it will probably become big, and if I become a moderator, I'll be famous for being in a big group. Wait! Better yet, I'll start my own group, and make it big. Then I'll be really famous." This is most likely the mindset behind all of these new groups.

It might show why my group Points of Infinity is slow.

If a group is about thought-provoking discussion, unless it is somehow famous, it won't be very active. BP is a famous group, so it is active. My group, not being famous, is not very active.

If the group is about game discussion, you might have a fair amount of activity, but it isn't guaranteed. Groups about random discussion is usually a bit more active, since people can talk about anything. But since they are so plentiful, there are no promises made.

If a group is about any other topic I have not listed, then it usually won't get much activity.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

To bad in MBT we dont make any new moderators, unless to replace one who is has been unnactive.

And can you name a so called famous group???

groups come and go in being noticable.

BP is a very unique group which makes it stand out. But this is a sit for games no politics mind you.

Again what makes a group famous?

What makes a group famous is usually one of two things: Numbers or themes.

If the group has a huge member count, it's well known. How many people who go to Bungie.net regularly don't know about MBT?

If the group has a unique theme (which isn't copied a thousand times), it has a better chance of becoming famous. Take BP for example. There are very few successful political discussion groups. BP is the largest, and those interested in political discussion know about it.

They know about it, but do they join it?
I know about the Marty Army cuz its big, but that group is a cemetary alot of the time.
Without the froozen Group spotlight that group would have nothing. Thought i bet the recent Marty news has sparked some life nto the old thing.

I agree BP is a good group. But there isnt much competiton for it.

You said most people dont like Disscussion like the ones in BO, but really BP doesnt do any recruiting besides links in sigs. It would be huge if the word spread.

See, i would want my group to be joined, because people want something we offer. Like for example, we are doing game reviews and previews, and people can submit there own reviews to us to be but on the site. And in the week or so we have been active, we have picked up 28 members. Very few of which will ever become mods, or part of The GA team. If you offer uniqueness, they will come no matter small group or large.

However, i fear that as Games in Action becomes more well known, our uniqueness will be stolen, and someone else will try and capatalise on our original ideas.

1. The large number of ODST groups probably indicates they are doing something right that other groups should consider emulating
2. You can be in 25 groups, so they are not monopolizing anything
3. Many of the largest groups are neither ODST nor are they Elite
4. A new group, ODST Archives, is original. It is totally devoted to rpgs and fanfics from any theme
5. There are alternatives. A new battlestar galactica group will soon start, there are lots of star wars groups, at least one lotr group, video game groups, and many more topics
6. Why should non-members care how many ODST groups there are?
7. If the primary issue is about recruiting, then this should be a recruiting discussion and not a discussion on ODST and elite supremacy
8. Both Halo and Halo 2 were made by bungie, so there will be a lot of halo themed groups
9. No one is forcing anyone to join any group.
10. Many contributers to both the public groups and other private groups are in ODST and elite groups and still have time to be in other groups
11. I am in two ODST groups and one elite group but most of the groups i am in are neither.
12. Both sets of groups are very active and that quality is usually seen as a positive in the septagon.

My flat out answer is no there aren't too many ODST and Elite themed groups. The whole site is based off Bungie and Bungie's games. The way the group system was set up was so that people wanting to discuss certain topics of the games extensively could do so in their own forum. So naturally Halo and Halo 2 groups will thrive, being one of their more well known games. In Halo you have the Human pitted against the Covenent and then later both against the Flood. People will naturally choose show their affection toward these sets of people in the game and name their group after them even though they may not have anything to do with what's discussed in the group. This is why you see so many elite and ODST groups or at least groups with that name.

You have to think about it. How many groups are named after directly what the group is about? Very few, which makes it very hard to find a group that you want to suit your purpose.

Also the reason there are many groups themed around the same ideas is that people believe that the groups are there for is becuase they are unable to find the group that already exists with the theme they are looking for or they do not like how the group is runned or the people in it. So they look for other groups to join but then they make their own. I think if there were an option in the search for groups for people to express what type of group they were looking and for groups to tell what goes on in the group. I think if this was inacted for you'd see a drop in groups that are the same overall and you'd see more activity in the groups.

With the demand to have active forums and many having names similiar to others, to maintain your group have to advertise, which is what many people hate and I beleive why many people dislike ODST and Elite themed groups. They just tend to advertise more than most groups and this is becuase they want to show their uniqueness when they have a well known common name as their group. If other groups advertise as much as these groups do I believe you would see a lot more groups being disliked. The plain and simple fact that most people dislike the types of groups is becuase of the amount of advertising they do through private PMs.

So there is not too many ODST and Elite groups it just seems that way because they are the ones who advertise the most. Also with groups being made by the fans of Bungie there can never be too many groups named after anything as long as there are members who make them and join them.

i wouldnt say to many elite/covie groups. but yes way to many ODST groups.Like ODST Recon has like 6 factions or something like that.and other groups that are based on spartans revert to ODSTs.i like diversity but this is overdoing it.

Its about Originality.

How are you being original by having a fiew dozen groups with the same theme?

Each similar group can have a different theme. ODST Archives is considerably different than the other ODSTs.

If you look at the elites groups and the ODST groups there where/are some big famous groups that have those names. Many people trying to impress people in that group or people outside will of course try to make their own and try to copy that success. Also groups branch off other groups because they are similiar in ideas but there is enough that makes them different completely. Take ODST Recon for example.

(Without trying to advertise but defend ODST Recon and it's factions) ODST Recon group has four factions other than their main group. Each one has it's own specialty. The First ODST Battalion's their clan home, the Second ODST Battallion is their movie home, ODST Archives is the place for Fanfics and RPG threads, and ODST Combat Analysis is where people can discuss anything and everything down to the smallest detail of the Halo Universe. The First Battalion and Second Battalion were made so that the activies of the people involved could be made secret until they are able to present them to the public. The Archives and Combat Analysis were created becuase there were so many people flooding the regular forums wanting theirs to be seen that it was hard to find anything else on the forum.

There are almost as many ODST groups as there are world domination threads in the flood.

It's cute how you talk about MLG like it's a career path or a way of life.

wow that's true... haha

  • 01.16.2006 9:21 PM PDT

1: Large numbers of ODST Groups = Large number of people with a small imagination
2: That has nothing to do with it
3: ODST Recon?? MBT??? (Mbt is named after Spartan armour and is about tactics therefore a slightly less common aspect of ODST and Elete groups )
4: That has nothing to do with ODST's, it was the name given to it because it is linked to this group.
5: I know there are alternatives, i am in Body Polotic, Games in Action, Theme masters, Chapter founders ( To name a few )
6: Non members of the groups you mean? Well, it's a waste of Space for a start.
7: It's not about recruting
8: Obviously, but it's not the only thing we need to talk about
9: They are trying to, i recieve around 2 Pm's per day about groups.
10: Im not sure what your point is.
11:And?
12: Activity is good, but not if it is regurgitated crap.
13: You should have had 7 points, it's Darker
