Recently, I've noticed a rather annoying trend developing on the forums. Instead of people bumping their threads with the all-encompassing 'bump', they post replies to other people's posts (no matter how inane) or post some random thread of conversation to cover up the fact that they are, in fact, bumping their thread. I call it 'pseudo-bumping'.

Case in point this thread. XO Prophet has bumped his thread about six times. Want proof? Check the dates on his posts. They are all about a day after the last, and he says things such as 'yeah, that would be a good idea', or 'bots in multiplayer would be cool'. That thread has died way to many times, and should be locked.

I'm not petitioning to get that thread locked or anything. It is but an example to show you the problem. Doubtlessly, after a short search on the forums, I could uncover more threads like this.

I understand that sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a post and a bump. That is exactly what hole these people exploit when 'pseudo-bumping' their posts back up to the front page.

That is defenatly Bumping. But yeah, unless each mod checked every threads dates, some will slip through.

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

Often people will do a "double-post bump," in which they recieve a reply, reply to that, recieve another reply while writing another post, and rather than editing their second post, make an entirely new one. But this is so common I doubt the mods handle it unless this means the creator makes five posts in a row.

As for this oddly named bumping, since it so subtle (mods don't have an infinite amount of time, so they can't always tell when people are bumping unless it is really obvious), it's hard to detect.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I think you may be over reacting with that thread. He posted 4 replys that i saw in a week.

If a member can't control themselves? Well, there are things other than the bumping post that can disappear. All done without a huge scene or ruckus.

You're going to steal a zoo? That'd make a huge scene. Perhaps you could be more specific.

Ooh, ooh, I know. Say the member has just recieved a free one-way trip away from Bungie.net! That'd make 'em happy.

Hence why three people will make a post saying "Superjumping is/isn't cheating," even though there is a post exactly like (or opposite of) it on the first page.

Well SuperJumping is a topic of itself. I go with Bungie though...it is simple exploitation of the environment with out actually corrupting the content to achieve the result. Thus, it is not cheating. You either adapt or die...and Darwing said something like that.

Errr...you do realize Bungie has said a thousand times they condone cheating feedback left against those who superjump, right? I'm sure Achronos is sure tired of repeating himself.

Paraphrasing:
Superjumping is exploiting a glitch. We ourselves won't ban you, but you will be banned if you get enough bad feedback. So just don't do it.

Well I have not kept up on the subject...I just remember reading from a few months ago when they announced that they would look into it.

Zanzibar is flooded with such threads. And every now and then, Achronos comes and says his piece, people congratulate him, some say they disagree, and the thread dies.

Then comes a new one.

Although on occasion someone will try to start a new argument, but that is very, very rare.

I have seen someone in the classifieds actually say

"Bump" And he got a way with it. But not every post can be checked so it will happen.
